Music Specialist School Discussion

Sorry, this is rather long…

We’d never considered specialist school route for our musical DS, especially at such a tender age (he is Y6). However, we’ve recently started seeing it could be an option in possibly near future.

The state secondary school DS is supposed to start from September has good reputation with a wide range of extracurricular activities and music is one of their strengths. However, they also hand out heavy amount of academic work daily, and basically keep their pupils pretty busy. Keeping teens busy could be a good thing, especially for those who may get in trouble or glue themselves to screen otherwise. But DS loves music and he likes to immerse himself in music more, but in reality, he’ll have less time for such freedom once he starts secondary school. The additional journey time is another thing. It takes 45 mins to get there, whereas it’s only 5-10 mins currently.

A friend suggested we could see specialist school as a small private school with strong music activities rather than a place where all DCs were aiming to be professional musicians.

Her logic is, the class size is a lot smaller than the state secondary school so pupils get more attention hence learn more efficiently, all the while there is no compromise in music studies. DCs who are keen to keep up academic work on top will manage to get good enough GCSE results for decent sixth form if they decide to pursue other than music for A level/uni. Although sixth form seems the most popular (and sensible) time to join specialist school, KS3 is actually the best time because if DCs change their mind on course, it’s easier for them to return to ‘normal education’ possibly at sixth form with good enough academic record and musical ability strong enough to be a music scholarship material. But if they stay focused on music and in fact decide to take it seriously, starting early will only become beneficial. Though, it depends on circumstance of course, and instrument. DS plays violin/piano for instance - hence early start can be rather important.

However, I heard and read some scary stories about music specialist school while I was researching. Some claimed they felt like they were living in a prison, some expressed unhappiness (even though they recognised the benefit and appreciated their fortunate position), some teachers talked about very able young musicians going to specialist school as a huge mistake, etc…

DS innocently expresses strong desire to go to music specialist school. I, as a parent, wish him happiness more than anything. By accepting his desire and letting him go where he says he likes to go, am I pushing him into a harsh and scarily competitive world unnecessarily? Or, like my friend suggested, it could be a lot more flexible than I may have been thinking and in fact could be good alternative KS3 education for musical and academic DCs?

Any thoughts/knowledge/experience would be greatly appreciated…

Agree it's very transparent, herts. It's simply down to our optimistic (hopeful?) miscalculation! The additional expenses of jd added more stress (though it was half expected due to our short notice).

Everyone gets the same condition and somehow people seem to manage it. Perhaps I feel the fees quite shocking as we don't pay any at the moment (state education)?? Hard to know what's possible without being able to talk to DH. He may have a different view. Or he may be even more shocked than me!

I would speak to school Kutik- I’m guessing they will have additional bursaries etc for these sort of things

We had a lovely day at DS's new school yesterday and got to meet lots of other parents, all as apprehensive as we are! We were treated to a brilliant concert by some current pupils and left feeling that we are definitely doing the right thing. Our contribution to fees was as expected so we can stop fretting about that now. Found a few older pupils who will travel with DS to JD on Saturday's, another worry ticked off the list there too.

Just got MDS confirmation for next year. Funny - I knew what is was going to say and that basically the same a last year but still a huge relief!

Hope you have made some progress kutik

littleladsdad · 05/07/2018 18:27

I know exactly how you feel, enjoy the feeling of relief!

School has said they would be happy to receive an application from DS, though they also want him to have a consultation lesson.

ZakStarkey · 08/07/2018 00:08

Sounds good Raspberry!

Trumpetboysmum · 08/07/2018 07:10

That's great Rasberry Smile

littleladsdad · 08/07/2018 13:35

Excellent raspberry, enjoy the process and I hope it goes well.

hertsandessex · 09/07/2018 09:23

That's good Raspberry. Hope it goes well. Presumably this is now for Sept 19? Any places left for Sept 18?

raspberryrippleicecream · 09/07/2018 12:30

Thanks everyone.

No idea about Sept 18 places Herts. DS is applying for sixth form entry Sept 19.

hertsandessex · 09/07/2018 12:43

Ah ok that makes sense. I was just wondering as have a friend who made a very last minute application at one for Sept 18. I think one has space but other don't (at least not MDS/boarding place)

Hello there.

MN's recent technical issues led me to dig out some of my old threads. As some of you may know, I've been around but with different usernames. I thought I would be back to Kutik for now to drop a quick update as I noticed I kind of abandoned the thread without a proper ending.

We worked out our financial issues and managed to send DS to his dream school after all the drama. It's tight but we are managing, just. He had some bumpy moments at the beginning due to homesickness but now seems to have settled well. He's made good friends across wider year groups, enjoys the academic challenges, sports, social events, and music, music and more music.

As you can imagine, life at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is never flat, and DS brings some extraordinary stories every weekend. I really think I can write a novel based on that but it'll be serious breach of trust so perhaps I should consider publishing a book in a different country (I speak fairly noncommon language). Grin

Anyhow, I just wanted to thank to all who kindly offered generous and valuable support, encouragement and advice during our specialist school challenge. As I wrote somewhere in the thread, we wouldn't be where we are now without you. I've learnt so much from you guys.

Hi, Kutik, i've had a few name changes too.

I also call dd school Hogwarts, but surely it's school of Music not wizardry, and they take ABRSM rather than OWL examinations. Grin
It's another life, I know.
Hope ds is doing well, we have Half term part of next week and the week after.
Nothing planned but mine usually just likes to eat, sleep, practice and cuddle her tiny niece.
I've also continued your thread Grin

Kutik73 · 08/02/2019 22:05

Yeah, Hogwarts School of Music. Grin

Not sure how well he is doing but at least he's happy. He can't wait for the half term holiday though. He has a long list of things he wants to eat. Ha ha.

Nice to see you again Kutik. Glad it all working out well so far - well great to hear he is happy most importantly but I'm sure his music is doing wonderfully! :)

Kutik73 · 10/02/2019 11:44

Herts, thanks. Smile

I wouldn’t say it’s perfect (I’m fine with sharing the details but perhaps not on the public board!). Anyway nowhere is perfect. All I can say is there is no better place for DS, at least for now. As you say DS is happy and that’s most important.
