ABRSM, Trinity etc Spring session exams - who's on the bench?

DS is taking grade 5 cello ABRSM next week, and I have a flute pupil taking grade 5 this week ( both dates different exam centres).
Pupil is destined for a merit, I think. Her pieces are pretty good, scales could go well if she concentrates, aurals should be fine as she's already passed grade 7 piano, but sightreading is inexplicably weak; she really struggles with rhythm, despite my best efforts and her piano experience.

DS's pieces are great, his scales are pretty secure but he's finding legato arpeggios a bit of a chore ( made harder by changing from a 1/2 size to a 4/4 size cello this term), his sightreading has the potential to be good ( he does well when I'm standing over him, cheering him on!) but he's prone to forgetting the last sharp/flat in the key signature and making the odd silly rhythm mistake, and his aurals are ok...IF he would just sing!
He's taking the exam at school, which is very convenient but does mean I won't be able to hiss last minute reminders at him!

So, what grades are other people's children/ pupils taking, and how's it all going?
As a parent of an exam child, I can now fully empathise with my own mum, who had to endure 2 of us taking exams in 3 different instruments, plus theory - much easier to be the child doing the exams! 🤣

Dance exams, i agree, take an absolutely unconscionable age to come through - for reasons that seem completely unclear, since moderating them would rely on complete video records, which as far as I know aren't done....

Waiting for DD's Advanced 1 dance exam - taken the day after DS's Grade 8 - and am expecting that it will be a good few weeks yet.

Our's are at a music school too. Guess it will be another week at least.

Dance exams - sometimes the mark sheets come through within a few weeks even if the certificates don't. We've been waiting since January for even a mark sheet for one set of exams though!

We finally got my ds's results from end of March last night. He's got distinction for grade 2 piano! We are so happy for him.

lovinbeingmum · 12/04/2018 13:52

Congrats *junior irvine'! :)

user789653241 · 13/04/2018 21:40

Thank you!

AliceLutherNeeMorgan · 14/04/2018 07:20

Yes we’re still waiting for a result from the 23rd March.

She did brilliantly in the G4 theory though which was a lovely surprise, and hopefully means less of a let-down if she hasn’t done all that well in piano...

MagnusMama · 16/04/2018 22:32

So, DD (G5 clarinet) got her result today- distinction! She really thought she had bombed out in the exam (really not enough practice was happening!) but she pulled it off. She's so happy- is really starting to love her music a bit more now- I suppose as they get better and start to play more interesting stuff it just becomes more fun Smile

AliceLutherNeeMorgan · 21/04/2018 15:52

We also had a distinction, for G4 piano. Big surprise - and also a huge confidence boost for DD!

I think that’ll be the last exam for a while, so it will be nice to have a rest (for me)...

Trufflethewuffle · 24/04/2018 07:11

First day back at school yesterday and DD finally got her result from 6th March!

Worth the wait though, distinction for grade 8 clarinet. She hasn't stopped grinning since she heard!

Madcats · 25/04/2018 08:56

Just popped back on here to see how the "just before Easter" folk got on. Huge congratulations to all the DC! I can't begin to imagine how hard grade 8 is (getting a distinction, doubly so).

I can't say that DD is practising any harder, but at least I get to listen to a varied repertoire over the summer. Her school have a habit of hanging on to certificates/mark sheets for a distant assembly so the memory of the exam is long gone by the time we see what went well and what didn't.

LooseAtTheSeams · 25/04/2018 09:50

Fantastic results everyone!
Finally got the G5 cello result - very solid pass, predictably let down by the scales fiasco but with very encouraging feedback on performance for the pieces. DS2 can now work on nailing those scales as it'll be a while before he can do G6 - he needs to get theory out of the way!

Floottoot · 25/04/2018 10:54

Apologies for not coming back to check on everyone's results for a while.

Fantastically well done to all DCs and their teachers and parents for some wonderful results, especially to those that have excelled in the higher grades - wonderful achievements!!

Loose, we have the joy of grade 5 theory now, too! I've told DS he just has to pass it, no need for distinctions or anything...just get it done!

Yes we are just " getting it done" here too . Though now withgrade 5 jazz on the horizon at least he can get on with his grade 8 whenever his teacher feels he's ready ( I am still determined that he is doing the theory in November though)

MagnusMama · 26/04/2018 00:36

Congratulations to those children who've passed since I posted!

Trumpet- have I dreamt that they're stopping jazz grades? Not sure why I had that thought.

Trumpetboysmum · 26/04/2018 06:35

Yes jazz still running up to grade 5 on quite a few instruments and counts instead of theory for higher grades ( but not for diploma so he's still doing that as well )

MagnusMama · 26/04/2018 10:28

Thanks trumpet. I think DD would like to do that while she's sorting her G5 theory tbh.

Trumpetboysmum · 26/04/2018 15:23

Ds is really enjoying it he does lots of jazz but kind if makes it up so he says it's good to learn the scales and understand a bit more about it -
