My dd is due to be in a dance show, we've been given her list re hair etc for the show and there's make up on there this year which is not a problem just new.

So what brand is best it needs to be bright and long lasting

Blue eyeshadow
Blue liquid liner
Red lipstick
Red lip liner

Thanks in advance

I went for Rimmel.

Nicpem1982 · 06/01/2018 19:48

Did it last well

Does if you put the lipliner all over ten put the lipstick on

cinderfrickingrella · 07/01/2018 10:25

This makes me so sad. Are the boys required to wear makeup?

Greenandcabbagelooking · 07/01/2018 10:26

Cinders - yes, they will be. People look like featureless ghosts under stage lights with no make up.

rhizomorph · 07/01/2018 10:48

It’s stage make up, as has been said, you look very featureless under the lighting. Boys wear it too.
If it’s just a one off with the make up use something hypoallergenic and inexpensive and use a fixing spray.

dodobookends · 07/01/2018 11:33

Yes, you need make-up on stage as the strong lighting makes you look washed out and like death warmed up otherwise.

Boys wear it as well, but not the same shades obviously, just subtle colour. The aim is to look as though they aren't wearing make-up at all from the audience point of view.

rhizomorph · 07/01/2018 11:45

It doesn't really look like 'normal' make up either does it. Close up with some of the make up, the exaggerated lines around the eyes, it can look odd close up, but looks fine from the audience.

dodobookends · 07/01/2018 12:21

Exactly. It's the impression from a distance that you're aiming for. I've done the make-up for a pantomime dame before, it's unbelievably god-awful close up Grin

It's like with costumes - some costumes can look really horrible close up or a dreadful colour, but put them on a stage under the lights and they look fine.

AlexanderHamilton · 07/01/2018 15:15

Dd's school specifies Rimmel eyeshadows & blush & Maybelline, Rimmel & Max Factor lipstick.

Whizziwig · 07/01/2018 15:19

I just used the cheapest! Miss Sporty or similar. I did choose not to do it when they were 3 and 4 though and can honestly say I noticed no difference to their appearance on stage during the performance or on the DVD, with or without make-up. They only wear it now because they think it's fun.

GrooovyLass · 07/01/2018 15:20

Used to use rimmel on my DD.

Boys wore makeup on stage at DD's dance school too - it's about them being seen on stage, nothing to be sad about!

Nicpem1982 · 07/01/2018 16:53

Cinder- as pp have said it's so she's not featureless on stage she'll be 'made up' for around 1 hour each show there's nothing to be sad about. The boys have a make up list too.

They haven't specified a brand but I'll give rimmel a whirl

Ffs, they're on stage; of course the boys will be required to wear it too, cinder. Don't do that. Nothing remotely sad about it.

SingingGoldfinch · 07/01/2018 17:10

Children in west end shows like Matilda wear no make up at all so I think the 'looking featureless' under stage lighting thing is a bit of a myth!

Nicpem1982 · 07/01/2018 17:15

Singing - that may be the case but dds performing arts academy have instructed us in what is expected and required in her first show she wasn't required to wear make up but she was 18 months old but as she's gone up a class there is now a requirement for show make up

It isn't a myth. And the make up itself can look different under the lights, stage dance make up tutorials often show how it looks under stage lighting.

One of our friends children was in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and definitely wore make up. If we're talking RSC's Matilda the Musical then that's a different theatre and lighting set up to our church halls etc and the need for string make up will be less so.

rhizomorph · 07/01/2018 18:38

Strong, not string.

Yeah this has always confused me. Ds2 has never worn make up in any of the West End tours he’s been in. He was horrified to find himself caked in it when he did his stage school show. I have spent years wondering whether professional theatre lights are just millions of times better. If anyone who works in the theatre can enlighten me it would answer one of the questions on my ‘must find out one day’ list.

rhizomorph · 07/01/2018 18:51

Yes it is, as I just said: "If we're talking RSC's Matilda the Musical then that's a different theatre and lighting set up to our church halls etc and the need for strong make up will be less so."
Though, again, child of a friend of mine definitely did wear make up in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (West End)

AlexanderHamilton · 07/01/2018 19:06

Possibly because the Cambridge is a smaller more intimate theatre than Drury Lane & aldo the style of Matilda is very different than Charlie.

Devilishpyjamas · 07/01/2018 19:17

Oh ds2 has just told me he did in 2 of the tours (not the third). One was ‘hardly any’, the other was ‘lots’. I had no idea (the advantages of a chaperone who takes it off I guess.

He was in a film and had to wear lots for that (but I remember that).

I take it back - and the person able up answer my question was in the house all the time Grin

Devilishpyjamas · 07/01/2018 19:19

From ds2 I have decided it must depend entirely on the production company, rather than have anything to do with the theatre because some of the theatres overlapped between the three tours.

nonicknameseemsavailable · 07/01/2018 21:15

we have a max factor blue eyeshadow which is really very good, strong pigment and wasn't too pricey. blusher I have always got from boots natural collection, nice natural shades, cheap. red lipstick I get MUA from Superdrug for £1. my girls get eczema but have never had a problem with these makes.

Nicpem1982 · 07/01/2018 21:24

Thanks
