June Music Thread

Hello all and welcome to the June thread! Waffle did me the honours of asking me to initiate this thread as she has no access to Internet while on holiday.

This thread was first initiated by Waffle when Goo was 6 and now she's 11. It is a thread for all the musicians, big and small, to share their love (and frustrations Grin) during the long path of learning an instrument. I first joined when dd was 7 and in the process of preparing for grade 1 piano for moral support. If you read the ending of the May thread you'll realise I am still a nervous reck Smile here we are now, two years later, Dd is 9 and preparing for grade 5 piano and grade 3 clarinet, the exams are in exactly 13 days. I also have DS 15 who is in the middle of his GCSEs at the moment, he has no musical interest.

As I couldn't leave Waffle without an introduction, below is a quote from the May thread. The only correction is that I believe Rara has now turned 9. Smile

I have two daughters. Goo is 11 and in her last term at primary school. She's working towards her Grade 8 Flute (some time next year) and playing from the Grade 4 Piano book (currently refusing to take any exams, and putting off the first proper performance!). Rara is 8, may or may not be doing Grade 3 Cello this term, and is approaching Grade 2 Clarinet.

Both of them played the recorder for years, starting as preschoolers. They reached Grades 7 and 3 respectively, but sadly neither has really played since the music festival a few months ago. They are obsessed with their Flute and Clarinet, and really enjoy Piano and Cello. There won't be many opportunities to play the recorder at the secondary school they will attend, so much as I love it, it's probably a good time to quietly drop it. Recorder has given them both lots of opportunities, confidence, reading skills... and festival prizes!

Aww, the dog is gorgeous!

Nothing happened, Fleur. Puberty is happening... she's only a few months off 12 now. I don't think she understands herself half the time.

LooseAtTheSeams · 17/06/2017 18:35

I just caught up with the YouTube channel - well done to all the DCs, they are wonderful! I'm hoping DS2 will let me record his exam pieces bu t he was absolutely against it Last year so I may have to wait until the school concert and try to film him on cello instead.
Drummers I'm also intrigued by your Yamaha piano! Beautiful playing and I was too transfixed to notice the pedal.
Prada how adorable! That photo is the last word in cute!
DS2 survived a mock exam in his lesson yesterday. Let's just say it exposed some shortcomings in his scales but the pieces are OK.

Pradaqueen · 17/06/2017 23:05

Fleur - he is called Bentley xx

onlymusic · 17/06/2017 23:56

Oh, as I was missing all the recent news-I feel like everyone speaks secret words which I don't understand Grin Is there secret exchange of videos? Please can I watch them too? I promise to download some new videos in return :)

onlymusic · 17/06/2017 23:57

Prada, your 'surprise' is sooooo cute!

onlymusic · 18/06/2017 00:32

We carry on with our two piano teachers-still in love with both of them. Ds's teacher, English one, is soooo unbelievably good.... She was teaching him scales, to play in different key and preparing for aural (as for grade 1) from lesson two or three...It is a first time ever I came across such a thorough approach... And she plays.... oh, how she plays even the simplest of tunes.... maestoso Grin .... I guess this is what is called a talent....
Another interesting thing I was curious about but it looks like it is finally confirmed - it appears that ds also has perfect pitch and both kids got it from their farther. However it works slightly different for ds as his cognitive abilities are different from his sister....

onlymusic · 18/06/2017 01:01

Looks like we also have to put dd's recorder career on hold Grin, after wasting almost the whole of year 4 she was finally moved to year 5 for French lessons-this is happening during recorder sessions. She also will be doing her maths lessons in the secondary school from year 5 -is it the time when schools are starting to take it all seriously? However, as much as I like the idea I decided no grammar or public schools for her, my choice goes to the pastoral care and keeping friends....

Mendingfences · 18/06/2017 08:33

We currently have 4 violins in the house, three of which are full size and on trial 😊. The 11 year old of the house is currently v. Excited and massively confused but seems to be leaning towards a favourite, and its not the most expensive one - it is however the one rigged with the most expensive strings....

Doubleup · 18/06/2017 09:23

Theory exam yesterday - who knows?..... I know she had a complete blank on musical terms, but apart from that she hasn't really said much. It has been very hard for her to try and put in as much work as would be ideal with the practical exam looming, so we will just have to wait. One helpful thing was that one of DD1's friends was over yesterday afternoon and I heard her saying to DD2 that it's not the end of the world if you fail (as she had first time) - you just take it again.

The bassoon hasn't been touched since Wednesday, but now time to crack the whip. 12 days left.....

Fleurdelise · 18/06/2017 09:37

Only I've sent you a PM.

I hope the theory exam went well for everybody, that's our next focus also, forgot about it but now, one way or another, dd does need to take the theory one to be able to take other exams when she wants to.

Double we had a different one with dd's friend, she is now saying she doesn't want to take hers (practical) because she has seen dd in tears, she was taking another exam the same day and saw dd. Had to convince her is not because it is hard (it is but if you are prepared it isn't) is because dd doesn't feel very confident.

Waffle puberty scares me, boys are quite straight forward, stroppy but uncomplicated, girls on the other hand...

I would have to open piano to find out model. It was made for the Japanese market only, in the forties or fifties, and very rarely if ever seen this side of the world. We bought it from a repairman who imported them. I think model name starts with P plus number? I will have to check!
prada Bentley is gorgeous. Do you take him on your Bentley to the Prada shop Grin
fleur detached house. A musician's dream. Go for it. Your DDis sweet

callmeadoctor · 18/06/2017 10:42

Oooooooh please send me a pm, I will try to record my dd ( if she let's me!!)

raspberryrippleicecream · 18/06/2017 11:10

Managed to see them now, thank you Fleur.

Lovely to see them all.

Mendingfences · 18/06/2017 12:11

Puberty is errrm interesting! I tried to get dd1 to do some sight reading of a duet with me ..... it ended up with her threatening to pull the doorknob out og that trumpet if i didnt shut up! She meant mouthpiece and flugel horn but who an i to argue with a hormonal preteen 😂 she did appologise later

onlymusic · 18/06/2017 16:37

Got your pm Fleur-thank you very much!
Ooooh, those kids.... They are so talented.... excellent idea and also such a motivation - I feel that when I am tired I can watch few videos and it will motivate me greatly to practice with my dc.
Drummers, I am becoming someone's fan Blush. There is smth about a talented man playing a piano, isn't it? I remember one of my friends said - if I meet a single man playing a piano I will immediately propose Grin

Fleurdelise · 18/06/2017 19:33

Anybody else had over 3 showers today? I have to say I promised I won't moan as I'd rather have the hot weather than the rainy days but today was sooooo hot.

Since yesterday we're back to music practice, she is actually driving me crazy, she sits down (after lots of negotiation), does a few bars once and says "done!". I knew that's going to happen but it is so bloody hard to go back into a routine so close to end of the terms also.

only indeed GrinFlowers
Just returned from a fabulous concert at the Albert Hall. It was nice and cool inside!

troutsprout · 18/06/2017 21:41

I have had an extra shower today.. it's so hot ! .. even oop north!
Dd dances around when she plays her clarinet .. she was saying it was too hot to practice today .. and I was thinking no wonder you are hot!!. She can't seem to keep still.Grin
Do others do this?
Sitting still in an ensemble or orchestra is a bit of an ask for her.

Doubleup · 18/06/2017 21:47

Oops Alexandra! Never a good look Smile

Hard work getting DD2 to practice today. It was very hot, she's still tired and she's been out of routine since her last lesson with school camp and theory exam. Was a disaster this morning, so we abandoned it. A bit better this evening as she was more in the mood.

Greenleave · 18/06/2017 21:55

Prada, he is super cuteeee, I want one! I also made a promise for someone to have a puppy when she turns 11(more of the point when she can walk him and feed him if its needed).
Drummers: still a huge fan here! I wont propose on behalf of mine though GrinWill show her the video tomorrow night as we have been out all Saturday then most day today.
Orchestra today and it was it. We made a mistake to get to the pool at 10.30 and they are all closed and we walked to the river side with no hats however had a very nice lunch in town. I went back for a nap as I was already exhausted with the walking and the heat(and properly the chilled rose glass) then spent the whole afternoon in the garden pretending doing something. We live in a (ok side) terrace, our room is a loft conversion and even with large to a big juliet balcony its still very hot now, we have been having a big fan on.
Anyway, paid £20 for nco just now, its £5 cheaper than last year. We dont have any hope as we havent settled with a teacher since last June. Our new teacher is away almost all summer and I have a feeling she doesnt know nco as well(she is French).

Greenleave · 18/06/2017 21:59

Trout, that is mine. She must be twisting something at least. Did I say here(few times) that mine occasionally practises violin laying on the sofa.

troutsprout · 18/06/2017 22:08

Lol Green .. yes we've had that too
We went to a lovely get together in the park today ... some great community drumming bands and brass bands. It was so nice just to sit on the grass on a lovely day and listen to good music

Wafflenose · 18/06/2017 22:31

Goo practises lying down sometimes. Shocking.

It was boiling today and I would have loved to have all gone to the beach, but Goo and a little pupil of mine (Rara's BFF) had South West Music School auditions (re-audition, in Goo's case) RIGHT in the middle of the day... I was out from 2.00-4.15, grr! Hopefully it was all worth it. Not sure Rara's friend is far enough along tbh, and certainly not as far along as Rara, but she is keen, technically perfect, and wouldn't fret about things like improvisation. We'll see.

Fleurdelise · 18/06/2017 23:05

Dd practises her clarinet by sitting on the couch arm rest. And also since she got the sling she does this thing where she rests the bell to her chest and basically the clarinet is horizontally pointing out and she spins with it like that. I have to shout at her to stop doing it tonight she only stopped when I said I'll confiscate her sling.

She has two duets to practice in clarinet one being Mamma Mia and she loves it.
