Starting the annual thread for those who have dc auditioning this year, as audition round starts shortly. DD auditions later in october.

Well, it shows he's self-aware, and I think there's a lot to be said for his honesty.
I hope it went well today, morning and pm!

stringchild · 05/10/2016 21:51

NotA - good for DS for knowing what works for him.

There were two percussionists in Under 10s with my DD last year, who were Grade 2 as well. But they were 10, not 7! So little percussionist is doing well.

Paulweller11 · 05/10/2016 22:08

Thanks wafflenose.
She's not done any grade exams in tuned or snare, only drum kit- but her old drum teacher (as we've recently moved) was keen on technical side and worked for local music service so did lots of snare work with her.
Xylophone, she's only just started but previously played gr1 piano so sightreading is ok, she can play a few of the gr1/2 songs and has taught herself via YouTube, the start of a gr4 piece.
Hoping she copes with sight reading, but good experience if nothing else.
Ah well, only time will tell. ConfusedSmile

Hi Paulweller11
when DS was 9 he attended an RCM orchestral workshop. At the end of it, the percussion teacher came to me and said DS was so good, we should really consider NCO. At the time I had no idea of what that was, so I checked out the website. Then I called NCO to explain that DS was doing kit, so lots of work on snare, but had had no chance to do orchestral due to lack of opportunity to do in school, etc, but that he did piano and would have no problems with tuned (as he later demostrated in secondary school!). So I asked them, would they audition him? The man said: NO. And that was that. I probably happened to talk to the most obnxious person there, I don't know. But he was so absolutely closed to the possibility. It really turned me off! I should've probably just gone for it like you without asking first, I'll never know. I don't want to discourage you, I see your DD has started on xylophone which is great and I do hope they'll give her chance Flowers

Eroica · 06/10/2016 12:24

Waffle- may I ask if you've had the DVD from the u10s yet? Dd keeps nagging me about it, so i could email them, but wondering whether anyone else had theirs?

LouieLouie0603 · 06/10/2016 12:25

Hi drummersmum,
I rang them and asked if she needed to play Timpani, as she's never played one before, they asked how old she was and decided that she didn't need to because her age/size. They said if she gets in, then she'll need to have access to Timpani before the course starts (But to be fair, I think its a long shot). So she only has to do Xylophone/Snare.

Not sure what she'll do for Xylophone, she's been playing a grade 2 piece and a grade 4 piece so will leave it up to her.
Snare- she's picked a grade 3 Trinity piece.
(Don't normally use Trinity, but their snare/xylophone books were gr1-5 so thought that might be handy to see what the level of each is like)

It was on their Facebook page that they were struggling for percussionists to audition, so I asked her if she wanted to try it. She of course said yes!

I think she only wants to do it because her sister (9) is doing an audition.
Her teacher at school only does drum kit too, but I've signed her up to local music service, so she's having lessons on xylophone/snare and hopefully a little timpani soon (although they are shorter than I'd like) .
She has done little piano though, so seems to be getting on ok.

Its a shame NCO were so dismissive of you when you rang,
When I rang they were ok...... but we will see, good experience if nothing else, and she can always re-apply next year when she's a little older and more experienced.
She'd rather audition on drum kit though hahaha!

LouieLouie0603 · 06/10/2016 12:26

haha- i seem to have two accounts- mmmm. must delete one

drummersmum · 06/10/2016 12:36

Ah, so you did talk to them. That's great. Best of luck.

TRL · 06/10/2016 12:37

Eroica, we haven't had this Summer's U10's DVD yet either.

Paulweller11 · 06/10/2016 12:39

I'm guessing they don't have many percussionists auditioning. 😀😀

Wafflenose · 06/10/2016 13:42

We haven't had Under 11s DVD yet.

Eroica · 06/10/2016 17:23

Thanks all, will try to get her to cease harassing me then!

Paulweller11 · 08/10/2016 10:19

Ok stupid qs!
Does she just need her sticks and mallets for percussion audition?
Just been on NCO website and it says percussionists need extra time to setup so audition is 30mins long?
I assume they'll have xylophone, timpani and snare already there?

drummersmum · 08/10/2016 11:36

You could ask, but I assume they will. The instruments will be there. Not the mallets and sticks. Always bring her own. Everywhere. Buy her a good mallet case, she will have it for years and it's a must! Is it soon?

drummersmum · 08/10/2016 11:38

Timpani mallets are very different from xylo. Make sure she has a pair she's happy with. Bell Percussion in Acton is fab and she will feel in paradise in that place.

Wafflenose · 08/10/2016 13:07

DD had an accident at school yesterday, and is now out of action. :(

We thought she might have broken her wrist, and she fortunately hasn't, but at the moment it might as well be broken because she can't move her hand or wrist at all! I am going to pull her out of PE (obviously), House Football matches all week, and County auditions this Tuesday. I suppose I'll also have to ring the NCO office and ask for advice about her audition. We might be able to do it later, at a different venue, or she might have to withdraw.

Paulweller11 · 08/10/2016 14:16

It's in half term, last week in October!
I'm worried, she's absolutely fine! Smile
They've said she doesn't have to do Timpani, so I'll bring xylophone sticks and drum sticks. Thanks
Sorry about your dd Wafflenose Sad
Tried ringing today, but office is closed, but will ring Monday x

bassclef · 10/10/2016 17:04

Meant to look for this thread a couple of weeks ago, but never got around to it. DS auditioned for U13s last week. He was in U12 last year, and hadn't auditioned before then. He was happy with how it all went, so fingers crossed! He loved the courses this year, and learned so much. Good luck to everyone for their auditions.

stringchild · 18/10/2016 18:14

hello just checking to see how everyone is getting on? another week before DD auditions but struggling to fit practice in....

OP posts:
bassclef · 18/10/2016 19:15

How's your daughter doing Wafflenose ?

Wafflenose · 18/10/2016 21:26

She's a lot better thanks, apart from a cold at the moment. Her wrist took 10 days to heal. We moved her audition from this week to practically the last possible moment... then back again as she had recovered, teacher couldn't make the new date and DD wanted her (and the familiar venue) more than she wanted the extra time.

bassclef · 19/10/2016 13:50

Glad she's recovered well and hope the audition goes well.

nicky10000 · 20/10/2016 22:28

Hi everyone my daughter plays the flute and has had 4 auditions and has just auditioned for the under 12s she has had an amazing adventure every summer and has always really enjoyed the auditions as the panel have always been extremely friendly. Another one of my students has just auditioned for the under 12s and she loved the audition too so fingers crossed for everyone and good luck to those who have still to audition. Personally I'm all in favour of the NCO I think it's great what they are doing for these kids I know it's given my daughter a lot emotionally I thought she'd be ringing me up on day one asking to come home the opposite was the case she didn't want the course to end she loved it so much.

Greenleave · 21/10/2016 14:00

Forgot to report here, it didnt go well for us however both my daughter and our teacher/piano accompanist said that the examiners were nice and relaxed. We will be trying again the next coming year/years
