spinning class teachers are just sadists in a tracksuit aren't they?

It's the most unnatural / un-sociable class I ever go to and I spend the whole time scowling and wondering why I think it's fun.

Damn teacher yelling at us to cycle up a bloody hill and turn it up a level harder.

I won't be able to walk tomorrow .

Think of the calorie burn

said · 09/06/2010 21:28

How effective is spinning? I've got flab to burn - is it for this?

Meglet · 09/06/2010 21:30

I don't need to burn calories . And scoffing Kettle crisps and creme fraiche on scones at the moment.

I am thinking of the better bottom and improved cardio work out . Not much gets my heart rate up except spinning.

I go to two classes...
One has an instructor who has buns of steel and amazing music taste
And she has this lovely encouraging voice which makes me feel guilty and like I'm personally letting her down if I don't add more resistance

The other one was probably kicked out of the army for being too mean and hasn't bought a new CD since 1996.

But I love both classes

spin is great for burning calories - 600-700 in 45 minutes can't be bad

newstart2010 · 26/06/2010 19:43

never knew it was that many classes, i did my first ever spin class last week after going to normal gym classes for a few months. I felt completely sick after but knew i had a great work out. Not sure if i will def go again, but prob will have to force myself.

theresnogoodnamesleft · 27/06/2010 20:52

I love spinning! theres something about being in a dark room where no one can see how much you sweat, where you can totally switch off from lifes stresses and just concentrate on you and the bike. Amazing. its also the only thing that really gets my heart rate up apart from cicuits or running so cardio wise I do it 3 x a week.

CerealOffender · 27/06/2010 20:53

i remember being told not to eat for an hour afterwards as i would probably be sick and i didn't go back

ivykaty44 · 28/06/2010 15:08

thats a real shame that you both felt sick and havn't been back. Would you go if it was a different instructor or built up more gradual to a better fittness level so you dididn't feel sick?

Yes I have felt sick in spin - but only the once and that was not when I started, I sometimes take it a little easier if I have been doing lots on the bike - there is no need to go full out to start

diggingintheribs · 28/06/2010 15:16

My friends spin teacher used to 'recreate' adverse weather conditions for them _ spraying water on them for rain and throwing tennis balls for hail

my friend somehow thought this was acceptable 'no pain no gain'!

Why not just go for a bike ride in the fresh air and get all that stuff naturally?

Sorry, that's not meant to be rude, just interested. I ride a bike round here up and down hills, in many weathers and it's very invigorating. What is different about spinning?

ivykaty44 · 28/06/2010 17:56

because in the winter months going out to ride wasn't so easy with the weather - so some cyclist developed spin, high intensity cycling at home. A lot of cyuclists have rollers/turbo chargers - fo rwhen you want to minimise your training.

Then of course the gyms etc got hold of the idea as a class inside - as it does burn a lot of calories and is a good cardio work out without having to get a light road bike.

So you have different types of groups of people using spin/high intesity cycling indoors and different sylts of doing it - of course a turbo trianer takes your own bike and you can use it in the garage or loungd ( the the lounge will need mats put down to catch the sweat)

hoep this explains where and why it came from and the uses.

i find using spin in the winter months really does keep me up on the bike ready for the spirng - my fellow mates in spin know its winter as I reappear in the spin classes

Whereas last week I did 130 miles outside for real getting the fresh hot ari in my lungs or cool air with a 5am ride

abr1de · 28/06/2010 20:50

That is some distance, ivykaty44!

lisbey · 28/06/2010 21:12

I started a weekly spinning class when I went on a bike ride with DH & DS and stuggled to keep up (despite being a pretty fit runner) It has made a huge difference.

For me, it's different to a real bike, because you work much harder for a shorter time.

It's also about the only gym class I can do - I have zero co-ordination and really can't keep in step for dance type classes.
