I want to do a 10k Jog/Run - can someone help?

Today, I did a 5k walk. I have not run since school, and on the rare occasion that I do, I get out of breath, geta "stitch" and have to give up after about 30 seconds. I am just a tad overweight (so says BMI) and "keep fit" by running around after two DC's every day. I walk between 30-60 mins a day with the pram.

I would love to do a 10k due to take place in October but don't know where to start. I don't like gyms, can't afford personal trainers. Sooooo, with that in mind, can anyone help me by:
Telling me which sort of trainers I should buy and
is there a website that I can get a realistic training programme from?

Sorry, bit longwinded I know but talking about running for me is almost like speaking another language . . .

How about doing a 5k to start with? I started the couch to 5k programme - there will be a theread in this section with a link to it,,,, i will link to it in a mo - i to would like to run 10k but struggle with 5k but do do iton occasion though rarely without a wlk in the middle. Your local area probab;y does a park run event weekly which is 5k. Good luck

this is the 5k podcast training programme couch to 5k

You are getting out of breath and suffering a stitch because you are going to fast.

Try to keep an even pace, no matter how slow to start with. You should be able to jog along, with your breathing getting no worse. If you start to feel breathless, slow down even more.

Ir is better to slow down, but keep going, rather than start walking.

You need to build some stamina this way before tackling speed.

Shoes - go to a proper running shop. Buy a copy of Runners World magazine. In the back is a list of all local shops. A proper running shop will actually let you try the trainers out up and down the pavement outside.

NZLCF - You're right. Running or Jogging 5K much more realistic and thank you so much for the link.
Lunar - stamina! That's what I don't have. I hear you and will take your advice.
Thank you both.

I am inspired and am waiting for the rain to stop - i am lacking stamina and supposed to be doing race for life in 2 weeks

MrsOCD · 07/06/2010 13:44

That's what I did. I walked it and although still pleased I did it, I'd like to one day jog or run that sort of distance. Seems impossible but one day....

I did one a few years ago and I'm not fit at all usually (nor am I now!). I just began running locally and built up gradually to running about 4 miles a few times a week. I think I gave myself 8 weeks from starting to train to doing the run, though the longer the better. I'm just very disorganised.
I didn't get shoes from a specialist shop though wish I had. I did spend a bit on trainers but should have spent that little bit more to get something that we perfect for me really. Although mine did the job.
The stitch thing is one of the most satisfying things to overcome, strangely! I found that if I slowed a little but kept a steady pace, breathing well, I could run it off a lot quicker that stopping / walking and waiting for it to go. Breathing is key - don;t hold your breath or huff and puff. Even when you're really knackered try and keep breathing deeply and evenly.
GMAP Pedometer (google it) is really good for plotting runs around your local area so you can see how far you go and gradually increase it. Apart from the trainers, it's all free! No need for personal trainers / gyms etc. Just good shoes and the roads outside.
make sure you stretch well before and after. You can get info on this on the net.
GOOD LUCK!!

Good advice. I'll benefit in getting a bit of weight off. Gyms are not for me.

DO Couch to 5K as below and then you'll hopefully find going from 5K to 10K is much easier than 0 - 5K. Make sure you do follow a plan as its much easier to stick to and feels more achievable. There are 10K plans too (try BUPA site) - these often start from say being able to run 20 mins so best to do the 5K first and then 10K. Definitely achievable by October if you stick to it (is it part of the run10K series ? I am doing Hampton Court)!

Good luck.

Well, MrsOCD have you made it out there yet? Just to share my experience, I started the Couch to 5k programme about three weeks ago, despite being a complete potato with zero stamina who could barely make it up the stairs without getting a stitch. I have taken it slowly and amazed myself by keeping to the programme, no stitches or anything. It really does build you up slowly.

I'd live to hear if you've given it a go.....

MrsOCD · 14/06/2010 14:29

Hi Mrs D....much to my shame I haven't. My pathetic excuse is that I havent the shoes. HOWEVER, its my bday this week. With my birthday money (I sound about ten), I WILL buy some shoes and I WILL start running. Well done you. I am SO lazy.

There is a couch potato to 10K programme as well from the same bloke.

I'm doing it at the moment, I did go to a running shop for the trainers. I started off with just the pair I already had but the pain after a couple of days in my knees was awful.
Now have a pair of Asics and they are lovely. Make sure you go for what suits your running style (your gait) rather than what you like the look of.

I go out 2 or three times a week and I feel really good after a run.

TheNextMrsDepp · 14/06/2010 21:14

oiteach - Couch to 10k ??! I think I'll aim for 5k for now! Glad you are doing well.

I haven't bought any new shoes but I already had a fairly new pair of cross-trainers (well, I say "new"; they were probably three years old but had only been worn a handful of times. I literally had to dust them off ).

So far I have had no twinges/aches whatsoever, but I think it's fair to say I am jogging rather than running, and I've only done three weeks. I am focussing on stamina not speed for now, as it is clearly the way to go.

First run of Week 4 tomorrow (if I can beat dh out the door), which includes 5 minutes non-stop. I will be so proud of myself if I manage that.
