Plantar faciitis

jooseyfruit · 02/05/2010 10:42

really hurt my foot whilst out running on thurs morning.
Have self diagnosed plantar faciitis, 99.9% sure that's what it is.

Have looked on various runing forums (prognosis fairly depressing) and just wondered if anyone has experience of this, what did you do exercise wise, what shoes did you wear everyday etc

TIA

yes I'd read that arch support is important.
Have some Birkies and they are quite good.

Have just googled arch support sandals and some of them are awful!

thanks

excellent, was looking for an excuse to go to TK Maxx's.

was getting very depressed at having reached an age where sensible footwear is a necessity

I have had this all winter, thank god its settling now though. My Fit flops did it for me and always always always wearing something on my feet (slippers etc)- very hard for me as I'm a bare feet girl.

jooseyfruit · 02/05/2010 12:16

ah fit flops, I was thinking about those, brilliant.

I'm very much a bare foot girl too, I'm absolutely gutted, and in a lot of pain too

I've just ordered some heel support insoles from a proper orthotic(?) website, which I can slip into normal shoes

My hubby had this - he was given some exercises to do to strengthen his muscles around the ankle as one was a lot weaker than the other - hence making things worse. He had to do things like flex his ankle up and down using a giant elastic band to provide resistance, stand on the edge of stairs etc etc.

It's worth checking the strength of your ankles - basically the physio put his hand on DH's foot and pushed toward his shin. DH has to push back - he could do it with one foot but not the other!

Igglybuff · 02/05/2010 12:20

He also kept running - getting trainers with super support for pronating (??) - went to a specialist running shop and has his running gait checked. What did it was playing football on a hard surface for years -so he needed better footwear. He doesn't play footie anymore.

jooseyfruit · 02/05/2010 12:22

I have had my gait analysed, but that was a while ago. Will get it done again when I feel better.

That's encouraging to hear about your dh being able to run again Igglybuff

Yes he's done a few short races since (10ks).

Seeing a private physio helped - he just went once and got the exercises to do. So worth considering!

dandycandyjellybean · 05/05/2010 10:48

I had this undiagnosed for over a year. Then demanded to see the physio at our gps and was sorted in a few weeks. Get a golf ball or similar and roll it under your foot as firmly as you can manage. Do this as often as you can (while mnetting for instance!). This really helped me. I went from barely being able to walk without pain to now being able to run again (am training now for my first 5k, however, am using mbt's and swear by them. Ugly but brilliant for running. Normal shoes otherwise. hth.

bamboo · 05/05/2010 10:56

It's a horrible condition and, apparently, can go just as suddenly as it arrived.

I get by with the gel-type insoles you mentioned. They are brilliant, worth every penny. I'm not a runner so don't have that added complication though.

HippyGalore · 05/05/2010 10:57

I had this after a broken foot (started walking in a slightly funny way). I tried orthotic insoles, which worked while I was wearing them. However MBTs actually corrected the way I was walking and let me wear normal shoes without pain. I'm not on commission or anything and it was the (not on commission either I hope) orthopaedic surgeon that recommended them.

It is now referred to as Postman's heel as policemen do not walk about so much.

I have had it for 5 years, since moving into a house with solid stone floors. It is worse first thing in the morning on rising from bed. Nothing made a difference - I have MBTs and fit flops, well apart from when I had pnuemonia and couldn't walk for a fortnight!

I then went on to develop tendonitis of the achilles, which was so painful I hardly noticed the pain in my sole anymore (every cloud, eh?) I saw a consultant last month who said ...

The two conditions are linked, although can get one without the other. Rarely give steroid injections for either condition anymore. Op for PF only 50% fixed. Rec physio and exercises.

Exercises include standin on stair with front half of foot and dropping heel down. standin one pace away from wall, place arms on wall and bend elbows. same exercise but with one foot forward and knee bent. these exercises to be done in groups of 6 repeated 6 times per day. Also chill a can in fridge and roll it under sole of foot.

Since seeing him I have started running again, having not run for a few years due to foot pain - yes I am suffering some pain whilst running (I'm currently only running onm grass) but this and the stretches are making life less painful overall - it is so great to be able to walk downstairs in the morning without wincing.#

Now, if only I could cure the shin splint like pain and the rotator cuff injury I'd be like a whole person....

jooseyfruit · 05/05/2010 13:44

thank you for all your posts

I have done some exercises, the ones that you suggested luckyblackcat, ordered some proper insoles, and looked at some fit flops (do MBT do a sandal?!)

Feel a little bit better today, a bit more positive that I will be able to run again in the near future, and this is in no small part due to all the encouraging posts I've received.
