Training for 5K run

Well I must say, watching the London Marathon this weekend has certainly motivated me to get back on my running path.

I started to run again a couple of months ago but I'm determined to really go for it this month and get up to 5k. I'm doing this fun run for Great Ormond St Hospital on June 6, so I think I need to get out there at least every other day. I can do around 3 -3.5k at the moment , but need push myself as it's still a struggle.

Is anyone else working towards a particular goal?

Yeah me - trying to do a 5k run in Sept. for a neonatal unit. Halfway through couch-5k and doubting I'll be able to run 5k but have to keep going I guess. Good luck

GreatOrmondSt · 27/04/2010 17:12

Great to see someone else doing a charity fun run. I know what you mean Ladylush, it seems so far when you start, I still can't believe I'm able to run 3k, but must admit it keeps getting a little easier each week. I just find it hard sometimes to keep my motivation.

Good luck with your training. Keep us posted on how it's going .

I am considering doing a 10k run in September for Marie Curie. I wanted to do one for Cancer Research but they're not doing the usual venue near me this year.

Currently I can't run at all (well I can but it takes forever and i'm very out of breath) I have done the Race for Life a few times and have never run the entire thing, but stop/started but I haven't trained for it.

My thoughts on doing it is that it will force me to try and get fitter and also help with weightloss, which I could do with.

I'd love to be able to run the majority of the 10k and do it in a reasonable time

jamaisjedors · 27/04/2010 17:41

Hi.

I'm not training for anything in particular but just wanted to say that I have made it to week 8 (of 9) of Couch to 5k and I think I could run 5k now, whereas in Feb when I started I was seriously out of breath after running 90 seconds!

I am running 28 minutes this week, the last 8 or so are quite hard but I am totally in .

The only thing that worked for me was sticking to regular days (Wednesday and Sunday) to run.

You were supposed to do 3 times a week, but I just took it slower, repeated the week's programme 3 times even if it took 1 1/2 weeks.

Good luck everyone

It's good to see so many members training for something, I don't feel alone anymore.

I was like that Eddas, I hadn't run for years before a couple of months ago, I can't believe how quickly my distance has improved.

I've heard of lots of people doing that program JamaisJedors, it's seems to be going really well for them too. I'm sure some of the girls I'm doing Race for the Kids with might be trying that out. Oh, if anyone else fancies working towards that run have a look here. I hope this great weather is going to keep up, it's certainly helping!

Good Luck everyone, keep posting on your progress.

I'm down for this years RFL and the womens 5km in Sept. In essence, yes i'm starting from scratch, from a lower place than you. This time last year I'd regained my prekid fitness and was running 10km a day or doing 2hrs aerobics a day, and did a few 16km runs. Stopped training due to variuos circs in November, and only just getting back into the swing of things. Its the hardest thing I've ever done . But you'reright, I see all the marathon runners and think there's no reason I cant train hard. But take this weeek; illness all round, kids off school, no time to train . The olnt chance this week would be Friday, but thats the day I'm over at the home of a friend that passed away, sorting things out

mustrunmore · 28/04/2010 14:39

Hey, I've just signed up for the GOSH one Its a week before my RFL.

GreatOrmondSt · 28/04/2010 17:06

Sorry about your difficult week mustrunmore, I hope things improve soon. Wow, can't believe you were on 16k runs, I'm struggling at 3k, very impressive!

Fantastic news that you've signed up for the Great Ormond Street Hospital run, it should be a fantastic day.

Good luck with your training and keep posting .

The 10k run for Bristol is next week, which is way too soon for me.

But 5K sounds perfect, and would like to train enough to raise money for the Wallace and Gromit Appeal for Bristol Children's Hospital where both DD and DS are frequent flyers.

mustrunmore · 28/04/2010 17:45

I love running, its just this hurdle of getting back into it after so long off . Hey Amy, I've got £10 sponsorshop already

GreatOrmondSt · 29/04/2010 10:33

I know what you mean ILMDMB, 5K is certainly enough to suit me!!

Oh wow, Mustrunmore, you don't waste any time .

ok so I went for a run today. But I wore my older trackie bottoms cos they are highr on the belly... but they have holes in the inner thighs, and they rubbed so bad I'm in agony Not a good start! I reckon I ran about 2km and walked the other 5

ladylush · 29/04/2010 20:58

Don't be hard on yourself mustrunmore - sometimes you get days like that. I was supposed to go to the gym tonight but I've got a bladder infection so just going to rest tonight and let the ABs do their magic.

mustrunmore · 30/04/2010 09:46

omg my thighs today red raw and killing me!

GreatOrmondSt · 06/05/2010 15:18

I went out for a run yesterday and probably managed about 3km and have to say, it's definitely getting easier. When I'm listening to music and running, I completely forget I'm doing exercise and I feel so much better for it afterwards.

Mustrunmore, hope your thighs are better now! Think of the good work you're doing!

Can I join in?
I've signed up for RFL on 8th June, ran yesterday and today - about 4k. Mainly run walk yesterday, all run today. I'm doing it to lose weight mainly, because dieting doesn't work for me.
Mustrunmore I find it really hard to find time and now go at 6.45am as that's the only time I have - means I dont tend to run in the winter unless I go in the evening with a friend.
I have also decided (because I do better with goals) that I want to sign up for a half marathon in the Autumn to run in memory of a friend, at the age of 45 (will be 46 by then) and having never run more than 5k ever.

GreatOrmondSt · 07/05/2010 10:39

That's brilliant good for you - Having something to work towards is a great motivator to go out and run. A half marathon will be a great challenge for you, do you feel like you've got the 'running bug' that everyone talks about?

Thanks GOS. Don't know, just want a goal and this seemed to come at the right time. I have no idea whether I ccould do a half marathon but that's what seems to be around in abotu 5/6 months. I'll work out what sort of run to do after looking round, but I'll keep running meanwhile and see if I can build up to a bit more than 5k.

Gordonsavingexpertdotcom · 08/05/2010 10:40

Ran 4k this morning. Probably could have walked quicker, but at least I ran! Anyone else?

mustrunmore · 08/05/2010 11:06

Thighs are better yes! But not had much running time due to dh being ill with a v unpleasant bug, so I had the kids all bank hol weekend , and I've also been v tied up clearing the flat of a deceased friend. I know,I hate excuses, but I think these are justifiable! I'm going to mess about doing wiifit later, and when the kids are in bed , me and dh are going to spar a bit

watercress · 08/05/2010 11:16

so glad to see this thread! i've signed up for a RFL in July. am starting to wonder if i'll be able to do it as my spd has reared its head (had dd2 in feb). can run for 10 minutes only at the mo, and that's on a good day.

anyone got any advice on running post-spd?

hungysavingexpertdotcom · 08/05/2010 19:25

Sounds like much more fun, mustrunmore . I think being hard on yourself can lead to a bit of a downward spiral - does with me anyway - I start to think my reasons for not running aren't valid and it's all excuses then I stop going because I think I'm a bit crap and my motivation goes. Very positive at the moment and making the most of it!

mustrunmore · 10/05/2010 18:49

Oh crap. I finally got my act together and showed my face back at the gym today. Did my 5km, and 15 min x train, but omg I was slow . And that was flat, no hint of an incline, unlike the real world. I need some serious effort/encouragement!

ilovemydogandMrBrown · 10/05/2010 22:25

So, was at a fete last week, and agreed to do a half marathon for the Wallace and gromit Appeal in support of Bristol Children's Hospital.

The only run I do at the moment is the school run so it will be a bit tough. Have been to the gym and think my strategy is make the cross trainer my best friend, and then work on endurance.

GreatOrmondSt · 11/05/2010 09:49

Gordonsavingexpert where abouts are you based? We've got the RBC Race for the Kids at Battersea Park in London on June 6th. It's a 5k, which you can walk, jog or run and there's going to be loads of entertainment there as well so should be a really good family day out. You can find out more information here Hope to see you there
