im not sure if im doing the right kind of training for the bleep test but ive managed to run 5k today on the treadmill. (the interval training doesn't change the pace so im just running and seeing how far i get) pace at the min is 7.2km per hour.

granted today was the first time ive done it but i am now absolutely wiped out! good job im not at work, id never have made it.

i have built up to this pretty quickly, about 3 weeks i think, and after the run i did 10 mins rowing, then the weight training plus attempted the press up programme.

its imperative i get through an upcoming fitness test which involves bleep test and a push /pull test - ive got to be able to push 35kg (which im no where near yet btw and panicking!)

im not really over training - going 3 times a week with a day of rest in between, not sure if im overdoing it or underdoing it - all i know is im knackered for the day when im finished. is this normal and will it wear off?
thanks.

what is a bleep test

yes, I think it's normal. 3 weeks is a short time to build up to that level of fitness and I find you feel tired at first and then it's like your body catches up and you start moving up the levels of fitness if that makes sense.

bleep test is the test whereby you have to run between to points (in my case 15 metres apart) before the bleep, the bleep gets faster so you have to run faster. starts off slow but gets progressively faster. im not sure if distance training is going to help, but i do have a copy of the bleep test so when i feel ready im going to see if i can do it.

i dont have to get very far - got to get to level 5 shuttle 4.

just feel wiped out after the gym, and look like death warmed up to boot.

(envy all the little gym bunnies with their perfect hair!) they look like this while i look like and im not angry!

I look like that when I exercise too (the red face not the perfect one )

make sure you are eating enough foods with iron in

one thing that really affects my tiredness in exercising is anaemia

I take that floradix stuff regularly. It has a big impact on my fitness tbh.

ThatVikRinA22 · 02/04/2010 19:07

whats floradix?

ive started taking an iron tablet daily as i was feeling very tired before i started getting fit, i was a little anaemic according to a blood test i had, but i said id sort it myself rather than take prescription iron.

i am also very slightly overweight - BMI is 26. so maybe thats not helping, but i am hoping with some sensible eating that will sort itself out with the new exercise regime. ill be well peeved if i am flogging myself to death and i dont turn into a vision of loveliness!

I think for a bleep test you would be better doing interval training. ie, do a run for say 15 mins at you usual pace then speed up per minute until you get to about 16k/hour on the treadmill. so, if you run at 10k/hr say, do 15 mins then go 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16, so adding another 6 minutes but fast running.

This works really well for fitness but be warned, it will kill you. You can also change back to 10 after every minute and class that as your rest time, so run at 11 for a minute, then run at 10, then 12, then 10, iyswim.

Good luck.

ahaaa. right. might give that a go then. but if im knackered just running a straight 5k im not sure if this might finish me off!

worth a try though to get me through the bleep test.

The running is quick bursts. I am presuming that it is taking 30 mins approx to do 5k ? 15 mins now will seem like a breeze and as you get faster the 10k/hr will feel like a rest

ThatVikRinA22 · 02/04/2010 22:32

im a bit slower than that! about 35 mins. but i will give this a try, sounds more like what i need to be doing for the bleep test. so thanks!

floradix

it's a liquid iron formula. I find I absorb it better than the tablets. Might be worth trying. You can get it in places like Holland and Barrett or independent pharmacies.

The other iron supplement that I find works well is Spatone (which you can get in Boots). You pour it into a glass of orange juice but I don't really like the metallic after taste.

i would do 5 minutes warm up at 8 kph and then turn it up to 9kph for the next two mintes and then back down for mins 8 and 9 to 7.2 then for minute 10 and 11 turn it back onto 10kph and then down to 8 for 13 and 14 and back up to 9kph for 15 and 16 and 10kph for 17 and 18 and then down to 7.5 for the next three minutes then back up to 8.5 for the last few minutes with the last minute going back to 10 or 11 kph

that way it gives you a good range of speed and lets you rest at a slower pace inbetween, which is what interval training is slow and fast.

ThatVikRinA22 · 10/04/2010 00:36

did the interval training today. yes it nearly killed me! lol

but, i feel good and felt like i worked alot harder despite running for less time.

did a 10 min warm up then upped the speed for a min, rest at original speed for a min, upped it more for a min etc. will carry on with this as i think its more in keeping with the bleep test. still ran for 20 mins, but at a range of speeds.

ive also started doing the weights before the cardio stuff. seems to work better for me.
