i'm not so worried about my times at all. BUT, the run is the south's hell run at bordon at hte end of November. so have any of you done it? what sort of training do I need to start?

so far I do body combat twice a week, and there's a big gang of them already doing it incl 3 of the instructors & I ahve been asked if I want to join them as well.

I know it's basically a mud run, but also know that I suffer quite badly with shin splints - we're talking the day after I do 5K on teh treadmill (hill tabbing) I struggle to walk properly the next day as it feels like my legs are about to break off at the ankle.

am I mad to try it? back in the day I could run and run well, would think nothing of doing 5 miles or so. thoughts? - obv now i'm 10 years older and also I think 1.5 stone over my 'ideal' weight but still only 9.5 stone so not mahoosive.

no problem at all I'd say. you can find 16-week marathon schedules for beginngers. so 10-12 miles in 8 months should be no problem. check out runners world for advice on how to build up distance. lots of training schedules, for races, are 16 weeks long - so you could perhaps find 2 - a beginner's one for, say 10k and then a second one working up to 12m. come and join us on the general running thread. lots of lovely people dipping in and out, updating and encouraging each other. it's called keep on kepping on running. or something like that.

have found you all. Thanks for the encouragement. I'm going to try the GSR as well (10 miles) the hellrunner looks to be v v hard on the legs - and as I say mine are not 100% the best as it is.

Firstly, easily done. Eight months is loads of time. Shin splints often happen when you pile on the miles too quickly, so just take it slowly and only add a mile to your training distance every 2-3 weeks.

Secondly, DO IT! I did the Hellrunner on my birthday last year and it was such good fun! Nothing can really prepare you for it, though some VERY steep hill training might help. And I'm talking vertical, but most people just walk up (including me).
