Can any of you recommend some? We'd like to buy one of each but don't know what to look for.

So can any of you help with:

Good brands?
Sturdy machines (tried some in a sports shop that felt a bit shakey)?
Where to buy?

I know the ones I've used in Gyms are +++expensive, but I'm thinking that it would be foolish to go for the best deal.

I'm no use for brands but you could try gumtree for second hand - apparently february/march is a great time to buy un-used New Years Resolution sports gear .

I had a treadmill at home many moons ago and it was lovely. I made sure I bought a model which had a reasonable top speed - you will find that the cheaper ones don't go more than 10mph (even if you are not a 6 minute miler, it is useful if you want to do interval training). Mine was also a folding one which didn't seem to compromise the stability. There seem to be so many more on the market now so have a good look around and then see what eBay can offer you. Good luck!

I haven't bought a treadmill but I did get a rowing machine and I decided to buy the model used in the gyms I went to. It actually was an ok price (I thought) for the value of knowing it was good and sturdy. I have looked at cross trainers before and believe they are about £700. I do think it is worth checking out your local models in the gym and having a chat with the instructors.
