Good abs exercises

Physically, I am an apple, so somehow manage to maintain good legs and arms etc., but have a wobbly stomach. Typically, I do about 20 minutes of cardio (lazy) followed by sit-ups and arms exercises, around three times a week. What else would people recommend, or specific abs exercises?

I want to know exactly the same thing.

Joins in the wait for instruction!

Now this could be crap, but I was told if you have fat on your belly and do sit ups etc that you could still be left with a belly but harder . It's best to do fat burning exercises first.

Tae Bo is pretty good, but bloody hard! It burns fat and strengthens your abs.

See? I'm a liar.

I second Tae Bo, burns fat and strengthens your abs all at once. The DVD's also include a half hour workout as well as the hour long one for when you are feeling lazy!

I damaged my heel running and have piled the weight on so I've just bought a mini trampoline. I'll be a size 0 by Christmas.

Hi,

one of the gym instructors at my gym told me in march that if I wanted a flat stomach I was going to have to do two things:

  1. lots of core work - my gym does a gymball class which specifically targets the abs so I do this every week and then do the exercises by myself when i'm at the gym.

  2. I would have to start running - I remember actually laughing when she said this!!!!

8 months later and a lot of pain, hardwork, running, spinning, abs work etc i'm FINALLY starting to see a big difference...no idea how the the whole running = flat stomach thing works though!!

running

SerenityNowAKABleh · 02/11/2009 19:58

I think running is very good for burning fat, particularly if you do interval training (so, alternating between walk/slow jog and then running). I remember once, way back in the day, I managed to lose a lot of weight that way [sighs, thinking back to the time when I could eat cake, run around a bit and stay slim].

So, Pilates, fat-burning and lots of pain and suffering. Got it.

I may have to give it a go then. I really don't like running on the treadmill, I look like an idiot.

Meglet · 02/11/2009 20:03

yes, Pilates will teach you how to 'hold' the muscles corectly. Then when you do normal crunches you will know how to work the muscles to the maximum. I go to abs classes at the gym every so often so I don't slack. I'm a bit of a gym addict though .

And a lot of pain and suffering TBH, but totally worth it.

theresnogoodnamesleft · 02/11/2009 20:42

Meglet - totally agree, pain and suffering all the way.....fellow gym addict here too!
I turn into a grummpy cow if I don't go.
currently doing 6 classes a week, mix of pump, spinning, circuits, abs class, plus running 5k 2/3 times a week, I technically should be a size 0. more like a 10/12.

notyummy · 26/11/2009 10:27

It will HURT is the first thing to remember. People with good abs have genrally suffered.

Tae Bo (Billy Blanks Boot Camp workout is hardcore - but with a great abs section towards the end)

Pilates, definitely.

Yoga also helps, as long as you do a dynamic style, not just the 'lying on the mat feeling Zen type.')

ShinyAndNew · 26/11/2009 10:33

the plank Do this for as long as you manage 3 times a day. It tones all the ab muscles.
