What's the best way to tone my wobbly bottom, please?

I don't need to lose weight - just tone. I am already running (but a dodgy hip about to scupper that I think). I am too sensitive to chlorine for swimming. I don't want to do a class either really (not being that helpful, am I?) Just want to know the best thing - pilates book? callanetics (or whatever it is..)

All tips gratefully received (my bottom really is very wobbly)

Only thing that stopped my wobble (and I was not overweight) was running.. but at least 18 miles a week.

Also swimming.

18 miles??? Cripes, and my dodgy hip isn't helping here.

Or my sensitivity to chlorine!

Ah well - maybe I'll grow to love the wobble.

Bloody hip though

Cycling really shaped and toned my bum and thighs. Not sure how that would go with a bad hip though. Sorry, not very helpful...

potatofactory · 25/08/2009 15:14

It is helpful, thanks. Cycling got to be easier on the hip I would have thought - bit city-tastic round where I live though...

Squats (with weights)

Walking lunges

Billy Blanks Bootcamp workout {disclaimer - this DVD is American, cheesy and an absolute killer - but it has lots of 'butt' exercises}

TheDMshouldbeRivened · 25/08/2009 15:20

cycling. I cant run as have MS but cycle everywhere I can. Its all city too. And hilly. you get used to it.

potatofactory · 25/08/2009 15:29

Right!

Got to check out Billy too, obviously...

lunges with weights

start with bar only and move onto weights

this is a bottom vanishing thing

lunges vanish bottoms

JRocks · 25/08/2009 15:37

Squats definitely. Pilates also good generally for all areas I found

bellabelly · 25/08/2009 15:40

Some pools these days don't use chlorine - are you sure your local pool does?

potatofactory · 25/08/2009 15:40

I like the 'bottom vanishing thing'. So - one leg forward at a time and bending down sort of thing...

I have a bad hip too from an old injury, I do run occasionally but what is really great for the buttocks is cycling, specially up hills if you have any nearby. It's much better for my hips than running as it's low impact, although I do get sore knees sometimes.
Think about it, have you ever seen a pro cyclist with a wobbly bottom?

notyummy · 25/08/2009 15:48

Probably a good idea to google 'lunges' and 'walking lunges' and see them demonstrated properly.

Word of warning - they do work, but there will be a pain barrier to get through! To do enough to be effective you may be walking strangely on the days following each session.

Matt Roberts has some good ideas for targeting specific areas of the body as well.

RubyBlueberry · 25/08/2009 15:53

Using your bum cheeks to walk around the room on! Stick your legs out straight in front of you, twitch your bum cheeks and off you go!! (and for extra oomph, keep them legs raised a bit if you can)

potatofactory · 25/08/2009 16:03

Thanks ladies - got some googling and practising to do! (and pumping up of bicycle tyres).

Just reading this thread is making me clench my bum cheeks!! that's gotta be good

worriedaboutbuses · 25/08/2009 17:45

yuo don't bend down no no

you put one leg in front of the other quite wide apart and then dip so that the back knee is lowered to the ground and the back foot is raised

sort of prince charming proposes

forget it, google like notyummy says

potatofactory · 25/08/2009 18:25

I'll google. I did mean that sort of bending (of the knee) as you describe. I dimly remember from the days when I went to classes. I remember it hurting

no pain no gain no pain no gain no pain no gain

Stair climbing is also good for the bum (and free!)
