Not wanting to sully the running thread with this subject

but (apologies for the TMI aspect here), does anyone else find that running can cause the runs (so to speak)? Everytime I go out (worst in the mornings) I end up having to run even faster on the final stretch to get home to the bathroom, or even dive behind a hedge on a longer run

Is this a well-documented issue that I have as yet not heard?

Do you really mean the runs ie. diarrhea? Or just needing to poo suddenly.

It's fairly common to need to poo when running, or even walking with some people.

OrmIrian · 30/03/2009 17:34

Suddenly and a bit looser than normal.

Yes i believe it is fairly common.

I assume you are running in the countryside Orm.

belgo · 30/03/2009 17:36

it is normal, I've heard of people getting that, not sure what you can do about it though (sorry that's not of much use)

OrmIrian · 30/03/2009 17:37

ROFL. Yes, not diving behind someone's privet Mind you it's got close at times.

Thanks for that. Glad it's not me being weird.

Yes, it's very common. I don't think there's anything you can do about it other than trying to run later in the day, although you could experiment with different food/drink combinations.

My usual run now has about five public loos along the way [smug].

belgo · 30/03/2009 17:37

plan your route to go past public toilets?

littlelamb · 30/03/2009 17:38

Do you not remember this little incident?!

OrmIrian · 30/03/2009 17:39

Not public loos apart from Morrisons which I have used before now. But my longer runs are all down country lanes.

littlelamb · 30/03/2009 17:40

It gets worse
Do not open if of a delicate disposition

OrmIrian · 30/03/2009 17:41

I do littlelamb, but as that was the only time I ever heard about it happening I assumed it was rare. But hey, if it's good enough for Ms Radcliffe it's good enough for me!

Happens to me, much too often for my liking. I have tried different foods, different drinks, running at different times etc. All to no avail. For me, it tends to happen when I push myself, either to get up a nasty hill or to keep to a certain split time.
But, it has also happened on a casual sunday social run.
If you find a cure please please let me know and in the meantime just keep running round a route with lots of toilets

OrmIrian · 30/03/2009 17:49

How about a cork ?

orm - look at this thread. not particularly informative - but confirms that it's normal. and if you google runners trots, or look on runnersworld you'll know you;re not alone. it's a fecking nightmare. and you know what? coverage of the Paula incident was so coy that I thought she'd just stopped for a wee. dh said the other day he thought it was rather more than that. it's awful but, while I wouldn't wish it on anyone I'm rather relieved that I'm not the only person to have had to dive behind a hedge....

OrmIrian · 03/04/2009 11:19

Yes, me too I spent much of last summer wondering if I was ill...

OP posts:
hatwoman · 03/04/2009 12:18

oh been there Orm...still not convinced I'm not...keep trying to find the time/courage/energy to go to the docs. I did have some blood tests a year or so ago and they didn;t show anything and the doc just shrugged and said, in a very couldn't-care-less type way that "we're probably looking at IBS and it's just a case of managing it". I've moved since then and half of me feels it might be worth going to my new doc - if I have got some form of IBS then it might be nice to have someone offer a bit of help. but then again, it might be absolutely nothing more than too much running...
