Just run 6 miles comfortably, when will my body start shaping up?

I cycle daily, but do no "proper" sport, so have decided to run for an hour 4-5 days a week. First try today-was actually wonderful (was dreading it to start with), breathing worked well, pace was great, no stitches, didn't walk, and ended up doing 6 miles in the hour. If I keep this up when will I start svelting? I want to look like an exercise lady, not a lady that is puffing off the pounds!!

why are you sore Paws? after running?

Pilates is great for arms and upper body as well. I have an MTV Pilates dvd and my arms are much stronger after doing it for a while; it is HARD on the upper body though. My DH has done it with me a few times, and the first time he collapsed in a heap at the 10 minute point saying 'You must be f**king joking!' He got back up and finished it though. He is fit; just doesn't do lots of arm work.

Matt Roberts books are good as well, and have circuits sessions you can do at home.

paws, sounds like you're already doing well and with a significant head start from cycling every day! 6 miles straight off is v impressive! I do that on a good day having started a few months ago. I yo-yo weightwise - I find i get ravenous in the day post-run so may v well be eating all the benefit of the exercise. Hard to know how much to eat - c 2,000 calories or a bit more to fuel the run?

Yes, twas the running-my friend asked me if I had a new boyfriend as I was walking "kind of funny" How rude!!! .

Oh rant hurrah (great name btw!)-I was STARVING yesterday-couldn't eat enough-thank you for telling me that! My body is quite good as long as I eat healthily, so will stay the same whether I have one apple or three IYSWIM, but the second I touch chocolate/cake/bread I am done for, and it was dd's birthday yesterday too- remembering the muffin AND the smarties ice cream AND the two slices of cake!!

Apparently the thing I got was cardiopilates-didn't get chance to do it yesterday due to 5 y/o sleepover, but I do a lot of studying so thought I could use the exercise ball it comes with instead of a chair to add a bit more to my workout. It has a resistance band too (and the ladies on the back were in better shape than on the others!). You are all so fab-I can't believe you are interested in this-I love you! Going for a run at 4pm today, wooo!

what do you eat before and immediately after your run Paws? That can affect how much I munch afterwards i find.

Pawslikepaddington · 05/03/2009 21:28

Well on tues I had a banana 20 mins beforehand and a glass of squash, and afterwards a bowl of cereal. Today I ran a lot later (4.30 as opposed to 9.30), had two buttered bagels at 1.45pm, and a bottle of water half an hour before, then a bowl of cereal when I got back and the run was AWFUL! Really bad run! What do you eat/drink? I am so new to this!

I don't eat before. On a sunday morning I get up, have a cup of tea and go. During the week I run about 6.30 having eaten nothing since lunch. I get good runs and bad runs and it seems to have nothing to do with food.

Time of the month makes a difference to me.

hi Paws

there is a running supplement in today's Times newspaper that is quite informative. If you can't get a copy from someone/somewhere let me know and you can have mine.
