Running off trail help

Hi

I am following the couch to 5k program and am fortunate to have woods nearby, I would like to go running through them but don't know what to do about footwear, I have ankles that are prone to giving way if they are landed on even slightly off centre.

Should I get lightweight walking boots (for more ankle support) or use trainers but stick to the paths?

Thanks in advance

Use trainers - you can get trail running ones with more grip etc.

Running on uneven surfaces is fantastic for building up strength in your ankles.

Maybe you could also do some strengthening exercises - like standing on one leg whilst brushing your teeth, or washing your hair in the shower.

Have fun, it is so much more fun running through woods and off the beaten track

I second what Wallace has said. If you get off-road trainers they don't control over-pronation (foot roll) as much as road shoes but your ankles quickly get used to the uneven ground. It does seem counter-intuitive but it really is true.

Try to relax and look ahead of you rather than straight down at the ground, your feet will adapt!
