Dh says yes, it will loosen it. Runners world say no - extra pressure and stress on heart can give you heart attack!!!
Am supposed to be doing 11 miles tomorrow (friend is nagging!). Not been out since monday, when it was just starting and did 4, although was crackered from 10 miles last fri!
its not a constant cough, throat feels thick with it but no mucus (sorry!). just feels tight when i try cough to clear it.

Any thoughts. Thanks

Bumping for you.

Pennies · 29/01/2009 21:28

No idea but bumping too. Not least because I want help PuzzleRocks on her official thread bumping role, at which she is very good and much appreciated!

probably not - although it might clear it, it will come back with a vengeance afterwards. And, if you think about it, your immune system is supposed to be doing a job working against whatever is causing it. If you put your body under physical stress, it will divert resources away from your immune system which will allow the bug to proceed unmolested - not really a good idea. Think about it like this - in caveman days, if you had a situation where a sabre-toothed tiger came upon you, you would have to run. All your energy etc. would be put into you running as the most immediate danger is the tiger eating you. If the tiger catches you, it ain't going to matter a jot that your immune system scored a strike against the cold virus - so we have evolved to put our "fight or flight" system first, and while it is in operation, things like digestion and immune protection go on standby.

dp has told me the rule of thumb - anything above the neck (eg headache, runny nose) - ok to exercise
anything below neck - rest

pgwithnumber3 · 29/01/2009 21:42

I would say a definite NO. My dear cousin nearly died and needed a heart transplant after exercising when ill. The virus went straight to his heart and caused it serious damage. I used to run 9/10 miles 4 times a week and wouldn't consider such a run even with a cold.

mooseloose, hope you stayed at home and rested today!

hi, yes definatly no run! can hardly breathe now - yet alone run!
My chest throat and ears are killing me! I lay in the bath and swear it whistled! Went to bed at 6 last night!
