I have just had a leaflet through the post from tumbletots. Are they any good? My dd is nearly 14months and not walking by herself yet. Wondered if anyone thought it would be worth it, or wait until she's walking? How expensive is it? Is it value for money etc?

I only went to a taster session
They need to be walking imho
Pricey so we didn't bother

My dcs have gone from crawling gymbabes sessions upto school age. You can pay per session and have a free taster. I don't mind the session costs but there's an yearly admin fee that raises the price. I have met some like-minded mums there but you're also kept busy with dc so it isn't awkward as some parent groups can be imo. Dcs love it which is why we keep going.

How much is a session and admin, or does it vary?

I wouldn't bother until she's walking. The 6 months - walking sessions seem a bit of a con to me.

tumbletots in Sport and Exercise

wheres the "mind your own child for 45 mins, listen to some music and pay through the nose for the pleasure" topic

I figured it was probably (loosly) considered excercise!! I would just like her to mix with other chidren more and someone i know (with older children) had mentioned dd might like it then leaflet came through post and i wondered what mn thought. Alternate activities? She likes to play by herself and i just worry a bit about her being antisocial. I know, now i should be on the nurotic mothers board!!

The admin charge is £18 a yr (for which you get the all-important tshirt and rightstart magazine), and roughly the sessions are £5-£6 depending on area I think? But you can email through the tumbletots link and enquire. The dcs benefit from playing with other children, improved physical coordination and confidence, learning to songs, sharing, following simple instructions and most importantly they sleep for ages afterwards! Usually the equipment and tasks stay the same for 2 weeks and then change. There is definite progression through the classes.

TheBlonde · 31/12/2008 17:26

I think here it is about £8 a class
Major downside is no cuppa for the parents

Heated · 31/12/2008 17:26

at that attitude, Riven.

I have taken her to a local stay and play but it has got so packed and like at all these things there is a group of mums that take over, ignore their kids and are just there to socialise, my daughter didn't really enjoy it because she just wanted to crawl but no space! She did go to a creche while i did a course but they said she was happier on her own playing with something than playing with other children, so i wonder if she will enjoy it

Tumbletots is more about parent/child interaction that interacting with the other children there imo.

TheProvincialLady · 31/12/2008 18:26

My DS loves it and I enjoy the fact that it tires him out more than anything else so he sleeps like a log afterwards. You could do the same thing cheaper or for free, but it works for us.

LittleChristmasCracker · 31/12/2008 19:00

local mother and toddler group maybe?

geordieminx · 31/12/2008 19:04

Ds is 20 months and loves it. There is a class before ours which is from 3 months or something which I find a bit as its just plonking the babies onto different bits of equipment. If you can afford it then I would say its definately giving it a try - just go along for the free session. It does take 4 or 5 weeks for them to "get" it, IYKWIM?

Definatley worth waiting til walking though.

rosmerta · 31/12/2008 19:09

We did Tumbletots for a while but it was expensive & ds wasn't overly keen on it. We had to pay by term, worked out at £8 per class, plus a yearly admin fee at £20. If you want to try it then do the free session but I think they get more out of it when they're walking.

I have found cheaper options at local health centres etc where its basically the same but a quarter of the price so that might be worth looking into.

Also, I wouldn't worry so much about your dd wanting to play on her own. Ds1 is nearly 3 & its only been in the last 6 months that he's started playing with other children, before that he would just keep himself entertained even when we were at playgroups etc.

Dottoressa · 31/12/2008 19:11

I thought it was rotten. We went to one trial session with DS (then a toddler), and they were very, very strict about the children sitting on the carpet at carpet time, and not touching the bean-bags when it wasn't bean-bag time (they actually had them out, but snapped at the children when they went near them).

We went to Gymboree instead, which was great!

nappyaddict · 31/12/2008 19:15

dottor ours is nothing like that. I think they are quite strict in the 3-5 group and i'm not sure if we will carry on when DS gets to that stage.
