Cycling - anyone use one of those follow on half bikes?

I've had a quick search, but can't see any recent threads. I'd like us to go cycling as a family and DD can't ride a bike yet, and is too heavy for a bike seat really.

These look like an ideal solution but are they easy to pull/safe??

What age did you start?? (the child!)DD is four and think she might be a bit young.

Thanks!

Yes, we've used one and they're good for when the dc is too young for his/her own bike - but your dd does need to be old enough not to fall asleep or start messing around/wobbling about which would be unsafe.

So it depends on the maturity of your dd and the kind of routes you intend to take.

And don't go for a trailgator attachment, they do tip over. I'd advise trying one out from a good bike shop before you buy.

It's obviously not as easy as riding just one bike if you're the adult on the front and you have to be extra careful going around corners.

there are two types basically - the ones which attach to your seat post and ones which attach to a rack - the latter are miles better (and more expensive) as they affect balance much less - they're also much quicker to attach

dd loved hers - we got it when she was 3 but she could already ride a bike so I don't know what it would be like for a child who was still using stabilisers

it does make it a bit heavier uphills and you can really tell when dd's making an effort - it's like a turbo boost

we've got an old second-hand one, but islabikes do fantastic new ones - they also do brilliant kids' bikes

Thanks so much everyone - DD is still on stablisers, but partly because we live on an unmade road and its so rough, but she can still fall asleep in a bike seat. I'll have a look at the islabike site thanks for that, all the advice was really helpful.

Never knew there was so much to choosing one!
