when do you find time/energy to exercise or sport?

I just build it into my everyday routines, so basically, I walk or cycle almost everywhere (shops, work, etc.).
I am trying to get a routine going where I go to Parent-toddler groups out in the villages 3 days/week (only 10 miles roundtrip at most), so I can get some more aerobic exercise that way.
I don't know why you called this thread mentalists, but It would drive me mental to go to a gym, seems deathly dull. And I am too rubbish for anyone to want me to play on their team in any team sports, though I actually quite enjoy footie.

mrsmaidamess · 02/11/2008 11:00

I exercise so I don't turn into a mentalist.(and a fat one at that )

elsiepiddock · 02/11/2008 11:12

Well, I must be a mentalist as I manage to go to the gym 5 times a week. My dcs are at school though, so it's easy for me to go after I drop them off. But when they were younger I went once dh was home and at weekend.

Exercising regularly gives you energy, makes you feel happy and, obv, keeps you slim and fit.

at thread title.

cornsilkpyrotechnicqueen · 02/11/2008 11:15

We spend considerably less time on mumsnet than yew!

peanutbutterkid · 02/11/2008 11:22

Elsie - what do you do in school holidays?
DH would seethe (and end up shouting at the DC) if I regularly dumped kids on him just so I could go exercise. How long are you out of house for?

elsiepiddock · 02/11/2008 11:25

I'm away for about 1.5 hours, depends on whether I do a class or use gym.

School hols I go in evenings. Dh is happy for me to go, he goes a couple of evenings too.

SmugColditz · 02/11/2008 11:31

Are they not his kids then? And he would punish them for being left with him by shouting at them?

Nice man.

I leave ds 'training' with his daddy and go. I'm very lazy so find it a drag but in fact it gives me more energy than it takes away.

peanutbutterkid · 02/11/2008 14:15

Only time DH gets away from kids is at work, MM (which is lots more than I get, actually).
I would love DH to take some 'me time', but he refuses.
He has taken 3/4 dc to beach this pm, actually, so I could gym if I were a gym person (but instead have a million housejobs to do, inbetween spells on MN).
Yes, he loses his rag easily. Not that I'm perfect parent, either, but I am more even-keeled. I think he works stupidly long hours (doesn't have to, he likes to), and is tired in general.
OTOH, 1.5 hours 3x/week with little kids, after a long day at work, would be quite exhausting for many people.
And if you exercise too late in the day (like say 8:30-10pm, after kids were in bed in theory, then it keeps you awake at night (does me, anyway). Plus that's my exhausted already time of day, not when I personaly would really want to toodle off to pump some iron.
So I was just curious how Elsie juggled.

DisasterArea · 02/11/2008 15:59

a fellow mentalist here

it's a very good question

I think the answer (and wish I could stick to this!) is to ring-fence time at the beginning of the week - involve dh or partner if possible - for two or three exercise slots and try and stick like glue to agreed times

also ... try and make it part of a routine so it's not such a conscious effort every time

... I work part-time and do a combination of lunch-time power walking (when dh is travelling) and walking late at night (when he is here)
