About to finish couch to 5k and I've got the bug
i run early morning on pavements and am aware despite street lights I'm not visible.
Don't like overheating , but what's your best visibility gadget?
a harnesz? A high vis top? A torch?
any other advice welcome.

Get a lightweight, high vis, waterproof jacket especially if running in the dark. I had a bright pink one when i used to run, my husband had an orange one. A good warm hat that doesn't obscure your vision. A head torch, they are compulsory for some clubs/runs, ny husband did the thunder run once and had to have a head torch,I stole it when walking to and from work early morning ot late nights in the dark.

It’s super personal - some people run a lot hotter than others. I get warm really quickly, so would only wear gloves at pretty serious minis temps and never a jacket or hat. I do have a headband that covers ears that balances chilly ears and a hot head pretty well.

My husband wears mittens with gloves underneath from October onwards.

Dont buy any expensive running jackets or anything until you know what you like.

Your road trainers are fine for pavements all year round. If it’s really slippy and icy probably give it a miss and go to the gym instead.

Like a previous poster, I run hot - always shorts and usually just a t-shirt unless it’s hammering down. But I do wear gloves, for some reason my hands are the only part of me to feel the cold.

I’d highly recommend the highviz stuff from Proviz - https://provizsports.com/ - not the cheapest but the best when comes to being reflective (is reflectiveness a word?) and has regular sales so sign up to their mailing list.

Also, as mad as it sounds a cap. Not so much for heat - but the visor keeps rain out of your eyes

High vis, gloves and look when crossing roads.

I have never been inclined to wear any kind of torch.

Oh - and if you run with music some bone conducting earphones are even more important when running in the dark so you can hear around you.

Shokz are widely seen as the market leader, but there are cheaper options out there.

I live and run in Scotland.
There are some hardy types in shorts and T-shirts all year round, but I like long leggings, long sleeved shirt and a light waterproof jacket in the winter.

Sports Direct have cheap versions that are perfectly usable.

i run in the evening and when it’s really cold I also wear gloves. The sort that have fingers and a mitten cover you can pull over or tuck away.

I do have a headtorch, but it’s only needed if I’m going on a club run on trails where there’s no lighting. On pavements the streetlights are sufficient.

UnaOfStormhold · 12/10/2026 06:31

On lights, it depends on your area; due to local authority budget cuts the street lights in residential areas of my town are a lot dimmer than they used to be. Plus pavement maintenance has suffered! This can be a bad combination, particularly if you keep losing your night vision due to passing car headlights, so I prefer to have a light.

A chest light (I find them way more comfortable that a head torch)
Gloves or long sleeve tops with the thumb holes in
A high vis jacket it gilet, pro-vis are great.
Good socks that wick away the wet when you run through a puddle
A buff
Ear protector head band

I’ve only ever worn a warm hat once and that was in minus temperature with snow.

I’ve got a couple of long sleep tops which are fleecy inside for really cold days
