Anyone want to moan about injuries?

I'm 47 and falling apart. I've been weight training for over 10 years but despite good form* I'm 9 months into on my second major shoulder injury in 6 years with a hysterectomy in between. I'm fed up of being banjaxed. I'm not looking for fixes, just need a moan.

*As confirmed by both PT and physio

Im 50 i teared my knee 20 yrs ago. Its progressively got worse over the years to the point i had a limp last year. Been working on rehab for 18 months😪

HollywentLightly · 13/08/2026 17:53

That sucks @ForPinkDuck ,I'm sorry to hear that. A friend has been through the wringer with her knee. Is the rehab helping?

Yes but will never be perfect, will need to exercise it forever. Will you be able to go back to the gym?

HollywentLightly · 13/08/2026 18:09

I'm at the gym, but only doing very light work (having just reached a deadlift pb just before my shoulder went). Even leg work is suffering because I can't hold the weight bar steady when squatting. I changed physio this week and he's less conservative than the one I was seeing previously so I hope I see some progress soon. I was beginning to improve but I had a very minor fall on holiday last month which set me back hugely.

Shit babe. Swimming yoga is helping me + physio exercises.

HollywentLightly · 14/08/2026 12:31

I miss swimming! Unfortunately it's the origin of my first shoulder injury so I have to be really careful. Good that it's working for you.

I have a sore calf and insertion Achilles tendonopathy, amongst other things. It is a sod. Been like this for months and I am really missing fast incline walks as that was my main zone 3/4 feel good workout.

Managing to keep going on bike and rowing machine and walking but it is all just a bit shit and sore and I feel like it is never going to go away. Tried absolute rest for a week and almost went mad.

babylone · 16/08/2026 20:03

@willowstarcan you work your yoper body instead? I have a sore shoulder/neck and a painful elbow (both on the right side) and i am trying to focus on my legs at the moment to give my upper body a rest (my left wrist is also feeling a bit fragile)
i have had almost a week of rest and it hasnt made much of a difference tbf…. I have booked a sports massage for Wednesday and hopefully it will help (esp with shoulder)

willowstar · 18/08/2026 08:34

@babylone thanks Babylone. Sorry to hear about your shoulder. Yes, I am trying to focus on upper body and some general flexibility but it has all been going on so long that I feel I am losing condition and my body shape is changing.

Hope your sports massage helps.

babylone · 18/08/2026 08:47

@willowstar sorry to hear that. I am assuming you have seen a physio? I find yoga classes that focus on lengthening and stretching really helpful as well. I did one last night and feel so good in my body today! Pain in shoulder and elbow have not disappeared but the shoulder one has really improved! Elbow is still super painful. I will book a physio appointment with DP’s health insurance
i feel like i am throwing money at it (yoga, massage, physio) because i know what it is like to not be able to exercise and i REALLY really dont want this to happen (again). I know how you feel…

Ugh for everyone who is suffering through injuries. Had another session with the physio this morning..he's actually based on my gym so he took me through some of exercises that are causing me grief (me not realising that was what he planned, so in my work clothes 😐). Anyway his less conservative approach has helped in the last week so maybe the light at the end of the tunnel isn't actually a train?

Similar age and the injuries are endless. I've given up my gym membership this week because I was paying so much just to end up doing a few weights and having a sauna. Can't afford gym and physio, but it feels like I can't do the gym without a physio.

I've had hypermobility for years but now almost everything is torn or healing. Was told I shouldn't do swimming for a few months to let shoulders and knees recover - but I know sometime else will go wrong after that.

SO DEPRESSING.

herbetta · Yesterday 11:00

Yep, tore my RC 18 months ago (entirely my own fault, I've learnt a lot since then).

HRT. Collagen. The book 'Built From Broken' (amazing & about £12 on Amazon). Excellent Physio. Lots of underlying mobility & strength work. Deep tissue sports massages (and self massage). Dry Needing if appropriate.

I've come back from mine stronger. I had loose skin where my biceps used to be at one point, I didn't expect to be affected by it all so much psychologically. Time, working at the non-sexy stuff, and ultimately appropriate progressive loading.

babylone · Yesterday 11:12

Deep rissue massage done yesterday and was fantastic. Shoulder is getting better by the day and elbow is stable but not improving… i need to book physio…
@herbettado you think collagen works? Ive been taking marine collagen as well as “jointace plus” since early july and i cannot say things have improved at all… (maybe it would have been worse perhaps?)

Edited

I can't recommend that book - Built from Broken enough, everyone I have recommended it to (as it was to me) has told me how brilliant it is. It is written by a physio and is full of all the behind injury, repair & recovery - including evidence & research based.

The two evidence-based supplements I took early on were Collagen Type II (I actually take Multi Collagen I, II, III V & X that I get from Amazon / Alpha Zero One) and Tumeric supplement). I still take the Collagen now daily. I threw everything at it and I went through several stages of recovery over about 18 months. I could lift weights again after 5 months, but it took longer to do the mobility / smaller stuff. I found it very hard to tell if I was doing too much or too little & couldn't have done it without my excellent physio.

Over the last few months I've been finally progressively loading to lift more than I did pre-injury. I'm late 50s.

I had a bilateral knee injury during the pandemic that despite eventual surgery and extensive physio means (as advised by the surgeon) I should never run or jump again. I will probably also eventually need replacements. Bummer. I’m in my 40s for context.

babylone · Yesterday 17:05

@herbetta- book is ordered. thank you. The jointace plus i take also has turmeric… i might look at the multicollagen one. Well done on your recovery! Very happy for you! 😊

@afaloren im sorry to hear about your knee injuriy. Were you practicing a sport at a competitive level?

I'm in the tendonitis club too.
This time it's the turn of the top of my hamstring, so to add to the "joy" of significantly restricted activity, sitting too long pisses it off too 🙄

I'd been looking forward to a summer of long, scenic trail runs after the squelchy winter/ spring, open water swimming, bike rides, and a cheeky play on the aquapark, but nope, the only cheeky thing going on around here is month 2 of butt ache.

The biggest game changer for me when recovering from my achilles a few years ago was elevating my ankles on a cushion so my weight wasn't on them as I'm prone to a Haglands Deformity on the edge of my ankle.

Now my best recovery strategy is a pillow on each side of me for side sleeping to reduce the stretch of my top leg around the hip.

I'm reminding myself that after slowly and tediously recovering from the achilles 4 years ago, I did sucessfully run my (deferred) marathon then go on to do a 5k pb plan that summer.
