Peloton users - what shoes?

Hello, I'm very excited to have just taken delivery of a new (to me) Peloton bike 😁. We've got a standard spin bike, and I used to use the app when it had full access, but I always hankered after the real thing, and seeing as I've been thinking about it now for about 6 years, I finally succumbed.

But now the gnarly question of footwear - what's everyone's preferred way forward? I like the idea of having cages and cleats, to allow for anyone to hop on just in trainers, but DH is a keen cyclist, so I suppose I should get pedals that fit with his shoes (although he's adament he'll never use the Peloton bike 🙄).

Are cycling shoes an absolute must, or are cages perfectly adequate? Any recommendations for easy-to-transfer pedals?

Clips and straps (cages) are rubbish basically, you’re better off with just flats. Shimano PD-EH500s are what we recommend to kids transitioning from flats to clipless in our cycling club. They are flat on one side and accept standard Shimano SPD cleats on the other.

There are loads of EH500 knockoffs on Amazon which will also be fine as you won’t care about weight on a Peleton.

Cool, that is a lot of words I don’t understand, but will look into further 👍🏻👍🏻

If you change your pedals for ones that take spd cleats it could be worth buying shoes with recessed cleats. Fantastic for doing bike bootcamp classes - no need to change shoes for each section. Also handy if you need to hop off the bike to go to the loo/ get a drink/ answer the door as you can walk in them without risk of damaging your floors. I have Tiems.

Hi- we use the peloton branded cleat shoes. We got them at same time as the bike in 2020 and they are still going strong. We absolutely love the peloton and still use it regularly after nearly 6 years! We also do the peloton strength classes which are brilliant.

For shoes, any cycling shoe that takes a 2-bolt cleat will work. These are mostly mountain biking shoes and have a recess so you can walk normally with them. Decathlon do good cheap ones in their Rockrider range.

Don’t get road cycling shoes as these take much larger 3-bolt cleat and are not great to walk in (as can be seen at any cafe frequented by cyclists).

Just to come back and thank you, I got some Shimanos as recommended above, DH has just fitted them for me, and will get going later today. Thanks for your help!
