Running watch for 13 yr old

Hi
I'm trying to encourage DS13 to be more active. He hates team sports and doesn't want to join another organised activity/class, so has agreed to start coming running with me.
I think he'd get more out of it if he can track his distance/speed etc and watch himself improve.
I don't want to spend a fortune! His wrists are skinny so an adult man's watch will be too big, and a lot of the kids ones I've seen have limited functionality.
Does anyone have any recommendations?
Thank you!

Garmin do a small option in a lot of their watches e.g. the forerunner 55s is quite compact and a good, relatively cheap option for running (though less support for other sports). The Vivo fit range is specifically for kids though may lose out on functionality.

Just checked prices and the 55 is more than I thought, the 45s is pretty good and a lot cheaper especially second hand.

I'll have a look - thanks!

I brought dd2 a garmin vivo active 3 on Facebook for £30. Works perfectly and she is very pleased with it. Might be worth having a look seeing if there’s anything suitable. I have tiny wrists and my forerunner 265s fits me well, but is probably more than you’re looking to spend.

Thanks @Whataninterestinglookingpotato. Does the vivo active have GPS?

I'd wait until he's been running with you for a month or two before investing personally kids are known to not stick to things. He can track with his phone/your watch until then

Yes. She’s been recording her runs on it and uploading them to Strava no trouble. The one she has looks fairly girly. I don’t know if they do a more masculine version.

Both me (petite woman/small wrists) and DS (skinny teen) had the garmin forerunner 45s. I dont know if its still current, though, i think 55 is the most basic, now, as a pp says.
Weve both had it about 5 or 6 years so DS was a lot smaller (about 10) when I bought it. He is super nerdy and loves stats so even though he rarely runs any more hes used it as an alarm clock and to track steps. His has recently broken but so far mine is ok

Thanks all. I don't have a watch either, so i guess we could share one/I could use it if he loses interest.

I'm not much of a runner myself really - I can do 5k happily enough, but I usually do HIIT or weights at home via YouTube!

I use mine for cardio/strength as well, more to have an exercise log, rather than monitor my hr

The reason I have never bothered with one is because my natural resting heart rate is really high. Dr is aware and not remotely concerned. But I hate seeing it recorded!

I got DS a Fitbit charge 6 as it seemed to be the most budget option with decent functionality ( plus I have one my self as it does everything I want), and as it’s unisex it has two strap sizes so the smaller one goes tight enough for his skinny wrists. Saying that, this was a couple of years ago and google seem to be making a lot of changes to Fitbit which I’m not sure I like.
