Anyone else not really a runner training for a run?

I've run in the past, the longest I've done is a half marathon, but it was almost a decade ago. I run on and off but do fairly regular cardio. I'm doing a 10K in June for charity and so I'm starting running again. Anyone else training?

Got it! Many are training for 10Ks or similar events, especially with summer races coming up. It’s great you're using this one for charity!

Thanks @momz1 Are you training for a run?

I hate running and I'm awful at it. I'm signed up to do a 5k at the end of June and I'm dreading it! I'm going to be last!! I don't understand how to run, I feel like I'm going to die within a few minutes. I've been trying to learn how to.run for months now, I just don't get it

Have you done couch to 5K @WoahThreeAces? I haven't but I know people swear by it. A friend of mine used to recommend to new runners to walk for three minutes, run for two minutes and sprint for 1 minute to help build up fitness and speed. I'm more slow and steady. I did a park run recently and the good thing about it was it made me run 5K but also didn't know if I'd make it round 😂

Me too. Had my second baby last July and it just became too difficult to find the time for the gym so started running. Used to be a regular 5ker before babies but was more of a weightlifter. During my pregnancy, my sister (who always hated running) got really into it and ran two half marathons. It really gave me a bit of a buzz and I love having a goal to work towards so, on a bit of a whim, I signed up for a half marathon in October. Longest run I've ever done is 16km so still a bit of work to do. I've not actually told anyone about it so less pressure. Been running consistently since the new year but reaching the point where it's time to actually start training for it. Thinking about a 10km before then but not made the leap yet.

I also felt a bit inspired by the London marathon and had a bit of a mad moment when I decided I should apply. I know it's massively oversubscribed but knowing my luck I'll get picked and actually need to do it 🙈

Not at the moment. Just trying to stay active and healthy!

I'm doing couch to 5k although can't make it past the week when it suddenly makes you run for 20 mins! I've done several park runs, combination of running and walking, and I am way slower than most other people but I do get round. I just dont understand how I am supposed to train myself to be able to run without stopping. But I am out there trying!

Chocolatecoffeecup · 08/05/2026 11:31

@Surelyitscoffeetimenow I think October should be plenty of time to train for a half if you're already running. I get what you mean about the London marathon. I'd like to do it but it's a big commitment!

@WoahThreeAces I'm quite fit and can do moderately intense exercise for an hour but I don't feel like I can run for an hour. I feel like it's my brain telling me I need to stop rather than my body needing to stop. Is it the same thing with you? I haven't done park run but it seems odd it should suddenly jump to 20 mins. I've just got back into it and I keep stopping but I'm sort of letting myself on the basis that I've got something to improve on. This morning I ran around the block without stopping. Not sure how long that is but I really wanted to stop on the incline!

In a moment of madness I signed up for something called a wolf run as moral support for a friend who really wanted to do it. On looking into it, it seems to be more of an adult obstacle course than a run.

Surelyitscoffeetimenow · 08/05/2026 11:58

@Chocolatecoffeecup hopefully. I do find it difficult to get myself motivated for longer runs - getting out there for a start then staying out without watching the clock. It's the distance I really need to work on but like you say, I find it more of a mental than physical challenge, especially as I reach certain milestones. Just trying to remember how good I feel (mentally and physically) once I've been out so that's the main driver at the moment.

Chocolatecoffeecup · 08/05/2026 12:05

@330ml Never heard of a wolf run. I'm intrigued so will google in a mo!

@Surelyitscoffeetimenow Yes I know what you mean. One way I can sometimes make myself get out is to say I'll run to a certain point and can come back if I feel done but often I'll run longer.
