HOKA Bondi 9 v Clifton 10?

I’m a plus size runner. Looking for some comfy running shoes because I’ve been using my new balances for a year now, but because I’ve walked in them too they’ve worn out and are no longer comfortable for running in.

I’m torn between the two. Which ones are better? I mainly road run.

Do you just want comfy shoes to plod about in or do you do any speed work etc?

if you just want to plod about go for the bondi 9 if you feel that you may want to pick up the pace a bit at times then for for the Clifton 10.

but really I would go to a running shop and try them both on to see which feels better to you. You might be surprised. You can also try a whole host of other brands there. Hoka aren’t my go to brand.

I found a Clifton much better than a Bondi although both are super comfy. The Bondi foam on the sole goes out really wide around where the ball of the foot is and I found that I kept catching it and almost tripping myself up!

My aim is to get more comfortable with longer distance running and then pick up speed naturally as I go

Have you tried Hoka? They come up very narrow (and are like running in bricks) now more brands do max cushioned shoes id look for one of them instead. They used to be pretty much the only brand doing max cushion but now everyone else is (and arguably doing it better)
I like the Asics Gel Nimbus, NB 1080 and Nike Vomeros.
Heard lots of good things about the Brooks Glycerin.

Edited

The ASICS nimbus look fab and they’re on my list to take a look at properly! New balance are some of my favourite shoes anyway, but Nike are off the list due to their recent campaign around marathons and walking being “tolerated”

I also prefer asics shoes to Hoka and would go for the gel nimbus over the Hoka ones as I preferred them when I tried them on last year.

i tend to stick with daily trainers like asics novablast 5s for every day though and then fast shoes for races, usually Saucony.

You really need to go to a running shop and have a gait analysis done. What is good for one person is terrible for another and you won’t know (and they aren’t cheap!) I made this mistake myself when I started running and bought the Clifton 9s. Perfectly good trainers for some people, terrible for me! Wearing the wrong shoes is the quickest route to injury.

Chocolateteabag · 22/04/2026 19:17

Definitely need to try as many pars of trainers as you can in a shop as your feet will tell you which they like (mine seem to know which are the most expensive annoyingly!)

I love the look of some trainers - but my feet just my feet say no
