I haven’t really used weights before. Need to time my arms up so want to get some dumbbells…but how heavy do I buy? Any help appreciated…!

Yes, I’ve heard you can’t pinpoint fat loss. But I’m going to be eating healthy and running around after tow young kids so figured lifting some weights would help make my arms look better? I don’t have the option etc to go to the gym itself so need something I can do at home.

Ive found using dumbbells over machines so much better for all over body condition, not just the target body part

I agree - plus I can work out with dumbbells at home.

I would add that a strong core will make weight training infinitely easier. There are lots of workouts that target abs, but one I do every single day is the Bowflex 3 minute plank. In fact I often do it twice in succession.

Caroline Girvan also has several excellent 5-minute plank sessions…

I started 3kg and building up-

10kg overhead
8 kg bicep curl
5kg lat raise
10kg standing row
20kg dead lift
16kg goblet squat

id get 3kg and 5kg to start and see how it feels. Timing tends to be more reps lower weights. Strengthening is less reps higher weights

I have a 10kg kettlebell which is great. It's very heavy, so I'm just doing a couple of reps to start off with so I don't injure myself. I also use 5kg dumbells and resistance band

As a PP has said, there is no such thing as 'toning' muscles - they either grow (hypertrophy) or shrink (atrophy). The 'toned' look comes from having sufficient muscle mass and low enough body fat for them to show. You cannot melt fat from certain parts of the body by doing weights on that one area. If you are beginning, you can get pretty strong and build your muscles by doing body weight exercises such as press ups, tricep dips, planks, lunges, squats etc - no equipment needed. This will start to engage your muscles and make them stronger. But for them to show up, you need to lose fat, through cardio and eating cleaner / in a calorie deficit.

This exactly. Also the muscles in your upper body are relatively small so you can achieve great results just using your body weight, no need to faff around with tiny dumbbells.
