Affordable at-home fitness programme for women over forty?

TheWonderhorse · 06/04/2026 21:07

I'm looking for a unicorn. A fantasy.

I want a comprehensive fitness program involving cardio, strength and mobility/balance for women over forty.

I want to do it at home and I don't have any equipment. I will buy resistance bands or dumbbells if I need to. I do have a mat.

Also. I'm skint, so free or cheap please.

Bonus points for extra organisation, a calendar perhaps? Also access via laptop rather then just an android app.

Yes I know I'm not finding what I want, but can anyone cover at least some of it?

Thanks.

ChatGPT would be a decent start

RandomMess · 06/04/2026 21:39

Hitt is very good and can be done with it without weights. Fit with Frank on YouTube - lots of free workouts

Saltwatersoothe · 06/04/2026 21:39

Les mils on demand i really like. I just do base level so I dont get body pump etc but I do get a mix of cardio, pilates, bodyweight strength etc. I pay annually as it is cheaper.

Chatsbots · 06/04/2026 21:41

Yep, ChatGPT or a programme off a platform like Train Heroic.

I do a variety of things, mostly from YouTube, etc.

Start something, anything and be consistent. Then layer in the other things as you adjust to new habits.

Joe wickes. Brilliant programme, about £70 for the year. Does hiit and you progress, also has recipes. Really good

Changingplace · 06/04/2026 21:45

Couch to 5k is free, just download the App.

Loads of yoga and general workouts on YouTube you can follow that don’t need equipment.

VenusStarr · 06/04/2026 21:46

Team body project have sessions on you tube. You can sign up and pay to access more classes, but I liked the free ones.

WinterNightStars · 06/04/2026 21:49

Another vote for Team Body Project

I’ve NC as it will share my name but 60 days free peloton app
you can filter by strength, bodyweight exercises, mobility, yoga, cardio, there’s collections like menopause or programmes like beginner pilates
if you pick bodyweight strength you don’t need any equipment and there’s also low impact under cardio
you can also filter by difficulty, time, instructor
stream from phone to TV
and bookmark classes and set up your own schedule

honestly I adore it and even if you cancel at day 60 it’ll give you stuff to do

P.s it’s not limited so anyone feel free to use it!

Stopsnowing · 06/04/2026 22:04

I have no idea about Les Mills at home but their classes are the gym I go to are the best

TennisLady · 06/04/2026 22:05

Peloton! I love it. Cardio, strength, Pilates, meditation, yoga, stretching… it has it all.

MachineBee · 06/04/2026 22:07

Council to fitness plus the basic version of My Fitness Pal. Both free. Both really helped me.

TheWonderhorse · 06/04/2026 22:07

Oh thanks everyone! I was expecting to be told to piss off and get a gym subscription. Then I remembered I'm not in AIBU.

Peloton looks great! Will go through them all though.

Les Mills on demand has everything you need. Strength cardio dance my favourites are body combat and body pump.

Chatsbots · 06/04/2026 22:20

The stretch class I’ve done since lockdown is now on YouTube live. Something like Move, Restore, physio led stretch class. 😁

That should be Couch to Fitnesd.

Theoretically I'm supposed to be an expert in this sort of thing, tho you wouldn't know to look at me. 😊

Would it help for me to post a daily thread on suggestions? It might be quite fun for me? Would that help anyone?

Ooh yes! That would be a good motivator!

Chatsbots · 07/04/2026 09:07

I'm off to do some caring stuff today, I'll have a think how to do it!

everycowandagain · 07/04/2026 09:20

The fitness blender website is great, lots of different exercise videos for free. You can filter by type of activity/length/difficulty/equipment.

Frequency · 07/04/2026 09:29

If you have a Fitbit or can afford a secondhand one, their new version of the premium app (£6 a month) offers personalised, AI-generated fitness plans. It asks what equipment you have, whether you want to focus on strength, cardio, or an equal split, and then generates a plan based on what it assumes your current fitness level is. It monitors your heart rate and adjusts as your fitness level improves.

I don't use it personally as I find it too easy, but it looks interesting. I use a running app for cardio and Caroline Girvan or Workout with Roxanne on YouTube for strength training.
