Walking route apps?

I’m hoping for a good ideally free countryside walking routes app. Apple and Google maps are rubbish for “off road” here (Sussex) and I’d like to travel further afield knowing where the footpaths and bridleways are so I can plan a route in new places. I just downloaded OS Maps but the “snap to path” feature seems a bit expensive at £7 a month.
Does anyone know a good cheaper app where you can create your own routes, or at least easily see footpaths/rights of way on a map, or am I hoping for too much?

I use Locus Maps for hiking. It can be tricky to use as it's got a load of features which are haphazardly scattered around the app and a huge number of settings which may benefit from tweaking to get it to work the way you want. But it does have good coverage of rights of way etc and planning a basic route is reasonably straightforward. It's got several paid-for tiers but I've found the free version to work fine for what I need.

I use footpath, just the free version to make running routes. You can save the routes to go back to and it’s easy to see what’s a road and what’s a footpath. I use it for both trail and road running.

I use footpath as well

I have to say I love OS maps! You can sometimes get offers to get a yearly sub for about £20.

Alltrails is quite good. You can do quite a lot for free. It shows all/most footpaths as well as specific routes.

I've got an app called go jauntly which has been really helpful for finding walks near home and when I'm away. You can choose how far you want to go, circular or A to B, and go via somewhere (pub, cafe) if you want? There's a good free version which I used first of all.

I like All trails and Komoot.

I use the paid for version of Footpath- £21.50 annual fee. For me, it's better than OS because it will let me create a route where there isn't actually a path showing on the map - which OS won't allow. Also I use it abroad a lot, and best of all, I use it on my Apple Watch, which saves me having to stop and look at a physical map or the map on my phone.

When I first started using it, I had a problem - emailed the developer and they got back to me within a couple of hours and were very helpful.

The OS maps annual subscription is only £34 and often on offer. It also gets cheaper the longer you subscribe. I've just paid £28 for my annual subscription.

Komoot is excellent - and one of the key things for me is that your route appears on your lockscreen.. so you can just quickly check you're in the right place without having to input your pin or whatever! It's got some great routes as well and is really easy to use!

ETA - and its free!

This. I've just re-upped to it, I don't think there's a better option out there tbh.

I really like the OS one too. I use it a lot. Worth every penny.
