What to wear for gym

Trying to start the gym now
what should I wear and what brands to go for?

Depends entirely on your body type, size and budget. Most women wear exercise leggings which are thicker and less see through than normal leggings but allow you to move. You don't want flappy joggers. A t-shirt on top and trainers for.cardio.

Are the shorts good?

I have no idea about shorts. CrossFit women wore ones with bands to stop them riding up.

ok thank you. Don’t think I have the confidence to wear the shorts anyway

I usually wear either sweaty Betty leggings (brought at massive reduction the sale because I refuse to pay £90 for leggings!) or a pair of bike type shorts. I usually also wear a day glow running vest as my gym clothes and running clothes are mostly interchangeable and tasteful colours are not my thing 😂.

People wear all sorts though. I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Just wear what you feel comfortable ale in.

£90 for leggings is crazy

Ancient 3/4 leggings or long lycra shorts and a loose t-shirt or vest. T-shirts are mostly old band t-shirts or cast offs from grown up DSs.

You will need a good supportive sports bra if you are going to be bouncing up and down during cardio.

I really wouldn't worry. I have seen people in jeans, chinos, pyjama bottoms, crocs, sliders, Timberland boots, and an old fashioned flat cap, to name a few of the weirder things.

I love gym clothes. I wear DFYNE and AYBL mostly. Leggings, shorts and sports bras.

MsRosewater · 01/04/2026 13:12

M&S have decent gym leggings and shorts etc. I’ve picked up a few things on Vinted too.

The most important thing is to feel comfortable and be able to move. Remember , no one else in the gym is bothered about what brand you go for or how you lookSmile

I am guessing you have to have a good figure to wear dfyne ?

I wear a black pair of tracksuit bottoms and a loose t-shirt.

BIWI · 01/04/2026 13:46

Sainsbury's always have a good range - and better priced than M&S.

You do not need to buy brands!

Sirzy · 01/04/2026 13:50

Wear what your comfy in!

I have some bits from Tesco which are great and depending what I’m doing handy as it doesn’t matter if they get damaged. I also have some bits from abyl which I love.

yomellamoHelly · 01/04/2026 14:26

I like the sweaty Betty stuff as it wicks moisture so I don't get clingy clothes. Wear yoga pants with vest top and sports bra on winter and swap the yoga pants for shorts in the summer. Most people wear a t shirt and 3/4 cropped leggings at our gym.

Do you mean a good figure is skinny? I see women of all shapes and sizes wearing skin tight leggings and a crop top bra, but I couldn't tell you what brand they are. I'm more impressed by someone lifting heavy with good form than a clothing label.

Most people will wear what they feel comfortable in and be concentrating on their session. They won't really care what you are wearing or if they catch a glimpse of bare stomach under a loose top, and if they do, so what?

Bristolandlazy · 01/04/2026 15:01

My daughter has bought two gym tops from Lidl and they're cute. She's bought some really nice leggings and gym tops in Primark. All the supermarkets sell gym lines. Nobody is looking at you when you're in the gym, everyone is on their phone and tracking their time etc, you'll be fine.

WrinklesShminkles · 01/04/2026 15:02

Try the M&S Goodmove range for cheaper gymwear that's still good quality.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 01/04/2026 15:03

Get yourself down to Decathlon and try things on. Lots of things are acceptable, find what suits you.

SummerInSun · 01/04/2026 15:41

I’m another massive fan of either Sweaty Betty or Lululemon leggings, also always bought on sale. Yes they are expensive, but you get what you pay for. They are don’t ride up or down but stay in place. They are sweat wicking so you don’t get soggy or ugly sweat patches. They have sensibly placed pockets so you can have your phone on your thigh and your keys in your back waistband. They are generally seamless or have seams in sensible places so they don’t chafe even on a really long run. They are really good quality and last forever which is what important because you have to wash them after every wear (you don’t wear underpants with them). I’ve had pairs I’ve had for over five years and would have work at least once a week on average over that time that are still going strong, even though they go through the washing machine and drier after every wear. And, finally, they are sculpting and flattering, which if you need a bit of a boost to your self esteem while you work out is very helpful!

There is a world of difference between “active wear” style fast fashion and proper workout clothes.

I’ve a mixture of Sweety Betty and Lululemon shorts and vest tops. They have lasted years

BridgetJonesV2 · 01/04/2026 15:44

Goodmove from M & S is really reliable. I've got a studio bike at home and wear 7/8 leggings with an Adidas t shirt that wicks moisture away. I have got a few pairs of Sweaty Betty leggings too and they are a good investment as they don't roll down/move up but I only ever buy in sales.

HeidiLite · 02/04/2026 12:04

I love CRZ yoga, great value for money, especially when bought from their own website. And they do more 'standard' leggings and shorts - the bum lifting scrunch types most brands seem to be doing nowadays are not my personal preference.

Yes, M&S are great and sell branded gym clothes too so that you can compare them. You do need to go to a big branch though as some don't have much. I ended up looking in the stores and then buying online as they didn't have the sizes.

Helpwithdivorce · 02/04/2026 20:04

You can wear what you’re comfortable in. Most of the younger women wear short shorts and bra tops. I wear long leggings and a tank.
Brand wise I have everything from sweaty betty to gymshark, aybl, pursue, ryderwear, oner, adanola etc.
People rave about sweaty betty and their leggings are nice. But no nicer than a pair of £20 gymshark ones I got in the sale. You don’t have to spend loads to get ‘sweat wicking’ clothing and FYI sweaty betty still show up the sweat patches
