Trainers: walking/hiking/trail running

50 year old, wide footed female looking for recommendations for trainers (definately not boots) to wear for brisk walks in woods, fairly flat countryside and roads. Current trainers have a sort of mesh and let in dirt, debris and water.

Not boots as previous ankle and achillies injuries mean that these areas are very sensitive/tender and wearing boots makes it worse.

I am a wide footed 50 something.
My trail running trainers are waterproof! I have Goretex Saucony Phoenix - in my second pair. I have started to wear theses more and more for “light” walking, but will always wear boots (Scarpa) for longer/higher/steeper/rougher stuff due to an old ankle injury.

I've never seen altra. Can these be tried on anywhere on highstreet?

@VividDeer- Start Fitness or local running shops should stock them - depends where you are in the country?

My merrell walking shoes have been brilliant, on last legs now at 10 years old, but I highly recommend

Blue Altra Women’s Olympus 6 Trail Running Shoes – GO Outdoors
Also try SportsShoes.com, Johnny Lewis, Start Fitness and your local running/outdoors shops.

Thanks everyone for your recommendations. My princessy feet are drawn to the Altra ones with their achillies pillow!

I have awfully wide feet and I find buying shoes of any kind a momentus pita.

For things that can be unisex like trainers, I simply buy mens in my size which always fit far better.

I have wide feet and sore ankles so csnt wear boots. I’ve had these for ten years or so and they are still going strong. Admittedly I don’t wear them daily but I use them for probably 4 weeks of hiking a year plus some day hikes.

I have some walking shoes from Hotter and they do a wide fit.

StationJack · 10/04/2026 18:46

@Phineyj , they look good. Are they nice and light like other Hotter shoes?

Phineyj · 10/04/2026 18:50

Yes, I wore them for 2 days helping with a Bronze DofE expedition a few summers ago in scorching heat and was quite comfortable.
