Best home workout app to build muscle and flexibility

I’ve stopped going to the gym and want to exercise at home. I’ve got dumbbells and kettle bells. I’m looking for an app that I can tell my goals and equipment, then open each day and there is a workout waiting for me without me having to search through and choose what I feel like doing. I basically want to be spoon fed a months worth of workouts. Is there such a thing? Thank you!

I use Apple fitness for mine and find them fab. I’m currently doing the 3 perfect weeks of strength training programme. They have loads of variety and helps to keep you focussed.

I used to use this in lockdown and it was really not bad at all. I don't know if it was on a deal at the time but I think the paid version was under a fiver. Definitely kept me going without having to think too much.

I second Apple Fitness, there’s plans which spoon feed you ,as well as lots of choice. Starting from 10 minutes,an absolute godsend

I’ve used the Apple fitness app today, screen mirrored it to my tv. It’s exactly what I’m after, so thank you! can’t believe I spent so much on a gym membership!

I’m thinking of this too but unsure what size weights to buy. What is good for a beginner?

TryingAgain2026 · 06/03/2026 07:25

I cancelled my gym membership last year and got AppleTv - already have an Apple Watch and absolutely loving the different workouts that are available. I’m already seeing a difference in my body from doing a mix HIIT and strength with a bit of core thrown in. Started with 2 and 3 kg dumbbells and now mainly in 5kg. Hoping to move upto 7kg for some moves soon. I feel motivated and love the variety available. Also the trainers give good explanations of the moves and posture etc and all workouts have a modifier. Music is fab too

Chat GPT is not bad for pulling together schedules based on your honest inputs as to where you are right now, what your goals are, what equipment you have and how much time you want to dedicate to it. Im a rowing coach and have really impressed when playing around with the app to see what it comes up with.

willsandnoodle · 06/03/2026 07:33

@CoastalGreyas a complete beginner I’d get some 4kg dumbbells, 6kg dumbbells and an 8kg kettlebell. I wouldn’t bother with any smaller than that, as you can use cans of beans. I still use my 4kg ones for lateral raises.
You can start on lower reps say 4-6, then as it gets easier and you can easily do 12 reps on the same weight, size up.
Also buy a yoga mat.
That’s all you really need to start with.

I’ve just added to my dumbbell and kettlebell collection as I’ve gained strength. I also have a stepper, but very rarely use it.

Try to do a mix of exercise styles. For example a short hiit workout, then upper body weights. Then another day a core workout and some Pilates. Always do a warm down at the end to stretch off - Apple Fitness+ has all the videos you need, I’m really enjoying it. Can’t believe I didn’t know about it before now!

@TryingAgain2026its so good, isn’t it! It’s like being in a gym class. It’s saving me so much time and money.

My problem with using ChatGPT to plan workouts for me is I do all the research, get excited then can’t self motivate. If you can, then I agree ChatGPT is a great tool for that. I use it for other fitness related stuff. The Apple fitness keeps me accountable as I’m watching the instructor at the same time.

Jumping on your thread. Can anyone recommend something without an apple device?

James768 · 27/04/2026 18:29

I’ve had good results with apps like Nike Training Club and Fitbod — both are great for building strength and flexibility at home, especially if you want structured plans. That said, for simple things like counting reps during workouts, I actually prefer using a lightweight reps counter tool alongside the app. It’s quicker than navigating inside apps when you’re mid-set and just need to track numbers. Combining both works really well 👍
