Peloton Tread - worth it?

Hi all,

would love to hear from people who have a Peloton Tread and how they find it. Worth the money or an expensive clothes hanger?

I am very time poor, young kids and work full time and have accepted I don’t have the time for the gym, I need something flexible that I can do when it works for me.

My friend has the Tread and loves it. I am not a runner though but I I love gym classes so hoping this will keep me going?

All thoughts appreciated as it’s a big purchase. Thank you 🙏

Not specifically answering your question - sorry - as i have a Peloton bike. Was worried about it but being said clothes hanger and tbh there are months of my life when it is. However there are months when it is the best thing I’ve ever bought. Also a working parent of 2 young kids so going physically to a gym is not really a viable option for us at the moment.

Anyway, I came to say, buy one second hand and it’s much more of a reasonable option! We picked ours up on fb marketplace. Loads of people selling them due to the clothes hanger fate, and you can always sell it on for similar if it doesn’t work for you. Then you’ve just got the subscription price as your ongoing expenses which is much more like a gym membership in terms of amount anyway.

I think the bike is worth it because you need that hardware to get the most of the classes. I don’t think the Tread is unless you’re really after a premium treadmill and a serious runner, as the classes can be run exactly the same on a standard treadmill that’s a quarter of the price. I have a Peloton bike but a Horizon treadmill and run the Peloton running classes on it.

Also the Treads are immensely heavy so very difficult to ever move (and tend to break when they are moved). Bike is a lot cheaper and more portable. Or you can get a NordicTrack or Horizon treadmill and just run the classes on a tablet on the device holders they have.

Ah it’s so hard to know what to do. It is very expensive but I need to do something, I have put on a stone this year and I am very unfit. I really enjoy the classes, so I’m hoping that will motivate me to keep going. I tried running the gym and I found it really boring.

Also being time poor there is no way I can get to the gym enough so it has to be at home for me to regularly do it.

I like the idea of using a regular treadmill with the app on my phone but will it be the same? I read somewhere you can’t get all the content on your phone? You only get access to some of it?

does anyone know if that’s true?

Hi @Helpisneeded100 i have a Peloton tread and I love it. I use it 5X a week to do incline walks which is probably a waste vs a cheaper treadmill but the fact you can watch Netflix and Disney on it now means instead of sitting on the sofa watching the same shite I’m more likely to get off my arse rather than doing an actual class (that might just be me though 😂). The treadmill itself is very sleek, intuitive to use and of course you can access the strength training, yoga etc on the screen. One factor to consider is peloton running classes are in mph so even if you can access them on another treadmill the chances are that machine is calibrated to run on kmh so you’ll constantly need to convert.

My belt was making a noise after about 2 years and Tbf peloton ended up replacing the entire deck without any quibble. Personally I’d recommend the tread.

I personally would buy a second hand treadmill (there are always loads about), get it serviced and run the Peleton app. There are loads of other guided treadmill runs available on loads of different apps. I think Peleton treads are overpriced as you pay for the brand.

just my personal opinion as an inveterate treadmill runner.

You can do all the running classes on any treadmill. The only thing the Tread offers in addition content wise to the app in terms of running is some scenic runs. Just make sure your treadmill has auto incline, most do if you’re past a certain price point. The app also has all the strength, yoga, etc classes. You can run it on a tablet, cast to TV etc.

Peloton also has a weird membership setup where the app only membership is cheaper than the membership with a piece of Peloton equipment. So it’s like £12 a month for the app v £45 a month membership with a Peloton bike or Tread. So if you don’t need the piece of equipment for functionality (the bike for example) IMO it makes far more sense to get a much cheaper treadmill and then get the cheaper app only membership.

That’s not to say the Tread isn’t a very nice treadmill. It is for sure. But I personally didn’t find the price gulf worth it.

Btw you can change the Peloton app to km. All my runs and metrics are in kilometres. It’s in the settings.

Does it have to be the treadmill? The Bike is cheaper and you can rent it to see if you like it first (it’s about £150 a month). It’s got a much smaller footprint and personally I enjoy the bike classes more than treadmill running generally.

Thank you all, so good to get different points of view. I really don’t like the bike, which is why I am considering the Tread. I also considered buying a cheaper treadmill and steaming the app on my phone, however for me it is really the classes I need to keep me motivated as I am not a natural runner.

I am moving towards trying it out for the 30 days and if I don’t like it I can send it back, as it is a free trial.

still lots to think about though.

Not sure if it’s of any use, but I have just received an email from peloton introducing a referral scheme - PM me if you are interested, I’d get a month’s membership FOC and you’d get £350 off a tread.
