Shin pain when running

Hi, I wonder if anyone can advise. I’ve just started running again after a 10 year gap - I’m taking it easy and doing intervals so I don’t go too fast. But I’m getting shin pain when I run - it doesn’t feel like skin splints but more muscular. Can anyone recommend some stretches or should I get new trainers?

I'm in a similar boat. I did use to get genuine shin splints so it's not that. Hoping it's just muscle underuse and will get better over time. I've changed shoes (oasics work for me) and do a longer warm up. Also started incorporating stretching before work out.

Stretching is mostly what I learned from martial arts. Sit on the floor, one leg out diagonal the other foot tucked right up into your thigh/groin. Stretch up with both hands then lean forward to touch your toes with the same side hand. Then reach forward between you legs as far as you can go.

Other then that I've been doing various leg strengthening stuff. Lunges, squats etc.

shin splints; too much too soon and running shoe fitting needed. I’m not sure what @Cerialkillermeans “genuine shin splints” there’s no blood test or scan. a physio or GP just diagnoses it from the symptoms you describe yourself 🤔

I’d go to a decent sports shop where they are look at you running and assess the best shoes for your gait. That made a big difference to me. But as others say stretchy are vital and to take it easy and build up.

Heel raises to strengthen & stretch your calf & toe raises for your shins & knees, before & after ever run.

Stretch and mobilise! Do the runner's calf stretch and mobilise in the hips by leg swings before starting. Do the runner's calf stretch as a cooldown and other basic stretches.

I got sore shins when I did a lot of running training during lockdown & worked on changing from a heel strike to a toe strike action. But it settled down.

You're just feeling DOMS. You've probably started back too fast, without adequate conditioning.

Try buying some proper footwear, I have asics, got my first pair two years ago and not looked back. They make my knees, hips and even my shoulders fall in correct alignment.

Thank you everyone. I slowed it down this morning and did more stretching than normal which seemed to help.
