Wearing glasses and exercise

damekindness · 03/01/2026 09:01

I’ve worn contact lenses for decades and always for exercise. I’m due eye surgery and as part of that will need to stop wearing contact lenses for a month or so pre-op.

I am VERY short sighted so will need to wear my glasses for this period of time. How do people manage exercise with glasses? I mainly stick to Pilates, Yoga and swimming

How very shortsighted are you?

Apart rom swimming I do my sport with glasses on /figure skating, various dance, yoga, cycling, skiing/

katepilar · 06/08/2026 22:06

Actually I mostly do yoga without glasses and lot of it with eyes closed. Depends on what we are doing in the session.

I found that no matter what adjustment my glasses slipped when I was running or doing yoga. I now wrap a small hair band around each arm just where it sits behind my ear. Keeps them nicely in place.

You can buy a little stopper things to put on the end of your frames.

@DisplayPurposesOnly and I was asking for their tips for wearing glasses during exercise as I’ve never done so. Many have taken the time to offer that advice and I’m very grateful for that advice

I am not sure what is it you are after. People just wear their glasses while exercising. They dont do anything special.

If your glasses fit well you’ll be fine, even swimming.

I am -10 in both eyes with severe astigmatism and if I didn’t wear them I literally wouldn’t be able to see a thing.

Thanks everyone - luckily I don’t need glasses or contacts anymore as I had lens replacement surgery as I had cataracts. I found the period of time I wore glasses really stressful as I didn’t get the quality of vision I get with contacts ( I was very shortsighted since childhood) so I just stopped exercising for the fortnight or so I needed to wear glasses.

I know that people wear glasses and exercise with no issues but for a contact lens wearer for 40 plus years it’s not an easy adjustment.

If you had cataract surgery, surely you weren’t allowed to go swimming during the recovery period anyway?

Thanks for the update. I noticed the thread is old only after I posted. I was browsing the "active" section so dont know why I found it.

Still wondering how shortsighted you were because my prescription is -10 I dont know anyone so shortsighted.
I dont have that much of a problem either with exercise or walking around places I know without glasses on.

damekindness · 07/08/2026 09:43

@SoManyTshirtsit was the 4 week period prior to the measurements required to calculate the required lenses for the surgery I had an issue with. The requirements is no contacts for 4 weeks to allow the eyeball to get back to its normal shape. For the post op period I followed the surgeons instructions regarding no exercise for a while and no swimming for a longer while

@katepilar I had -10 in one and -13 in another - plus cataracts so uncorrected vision for me was quite frightening. Post surgery I can see perfectly without any correction and it is extraordinary to wake up and be able to see clearly!

Do you swim in your lenses @damekindness?
I never have as I was told not to due to infection risk, be interested to know your experience. I just swim blind lol. My near vision is tolerable but my distance is dreadful.
For pilates I don't use glasses or lenses, I put my lenses in for most other activities, but I would go without if I couldn't. You do see lots of people in glasses in the gym and classes, I just find it easier without.

Sorry just realised this is an old thread

damekindness · 07/08/2026 10:08

@gingercat02 when I wore contacts (they were gas permeable ones) I used to swim in them with no problem - though I am a ‘head out of the water old lady breaststroke’ swimmer. I was always fairly cavalier about contact lens care and hygiene but somehow managed to wear them for 40 years without any issues. I was probably lucky!

@gingercat02 I should add my lenses are now implanted as part of the cataract surgery so I don’t need contacts or glasses now. It’s amazing

Exercise - just wear them as normal. I do have some neoprene bands that can be used for running etc to stop them
slipping.

Swimming - specsavers do off the shelf prescription googles (you may have to compromise your sight a little!) £25 last time I brought them.

and by the compromise your sight you may have to buy -5.00 if your -4.50 and -6 in different eyes for example.

itsgettingweird · 07/08/2026 10:22

Ahhhh just seen the date and realised this is an old thread.

Advice still stands for anyone asking the question but OP I’m so pleased for you surgery went well and your glasses free.

My MIL had cataract surgery a few years back. She'd worn glasses since she about 5. She didn't need her glasses for distance afterwards, but did find she needed reading glasses and it was a pain to take them on and off. She got a pair of varifocals with reading at the bottom and plain at the top. I couldn't get used to her without glasses either 😆
