Warm, really waterproof coat recommendations?

Lavender14 · 07/12/2025 21:58

Not sure if this is the best place but wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a warm but mainly very waterproof coat? I'm out walking in all weathers with ds and the last two 'waterproof' coats I've bought (both regatta) have let in very quickly at the base of the hood, the arms and the sides and into the pockets which were zipped up. Today I was soaked through within 10 minutes whereas ds was completely dry in his puddle suit and wanted to stay out for longer. I had the same issue before washing and after washing with waterproofing detergent so I'm thinking it's an issue with the seams. Anyone able to point me in the direction of something more durable? Thanks in advance!

I am loving my new Didrikson coat I got for this exact reason. It's so warm and fully waterproof. I read up for recommendations too and Didrikson seemed to be frequently popping up. I already had the Galon rain suits for the children which are fantastic. Would recommend!

For serious waterproofing, you need to spend serious money. In terms of outdoor wear, Regatta is very entry level.

For warm and waterproof look at Didrickson’s.

Red Equipment Alter Evo Pro robe is really, really excellent, 15k waterproof and very warm, and actually pretty stylish in a utility/sportswear kind of way. I absolutely love mine.

Love my trethorn. Wasn’t too expensive and fully water proof. Bought for dog walking. My muck boots are tall enough to reach my knees and I’m basically well protected

Ikeameatballlunch · 14/12/2025 20:04

Though they don’t seem to do the one I had now :/ it wasn’t as expensive as those. Was in the sale

PauliesWalnuts · 14/12/2025 20:06

Rab’s Valiance coat is waterproof AND insulated. They are expensive but I got £100 off mine at one of their factory shops. It’s the best winter coat I’ve ever had.

Ikeameatballlunch · 14/12/2025 20:07

I think this is the new version; you’d have to layer up underneath if needed more warmth. The one I have is more padded / puffa but fully water proof

Look at Lands End squall parka. Everyone in my family has one.

dd has an equidry. Similar but a bit more flattering than a dry robe. Intended for horse riding but suits many purposes. Never yet leaked through hours of heavy rain on a Scottish hillside

To add you can get short or long, light, medium or heavy. Far more options than the dry robe

Cat1504 · 14/12/2025 20:20

you are never going to get a waterproof coat from regatta….it’s a cheap brand….you need to pay a lot more for fully waterproof

Doje · 14/12/2025 20:20

I second Didrikson. I'm a spaniel owner and it keeps me dry and warm in all weathers, and I love it.

I bought mine on Vinted, there was plenty there only lightly worn.

Amethystanddiamonds · 14/12/2025 20:23

You need to look at the waterproof ratings. Most regatta coats that are warm are only 5000 hydrostatic head which is shower proof not waterproof and basically useless in anything more than drizzle. Their more expensive ones are 10000 hydrostatic head. Which is much better but I don't wear mine if I'm going to be out more than 30-60 mins in heavy rain. I wear a warm Rab mid layer and a goretex shell waterproof outer (think it's 30,000) if I'm going to be out for a significant proportion of the day in wet weather.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 14/12/2025 20:33

If you want seriously waterproof, look at the more popular farm brands! I admit that they're not the most stylish or colourful, but Ridgelines have a reputation that make them worth it.

NutButterOnToast · 14/12/2025 20:35

It's better value to buy a fully waterproof outer shell and then layer up underneath for warmth

You'll need taped seams and a minimum of 10000 HH - ideally you'd want 20+

If you don't want to spend £££ I would try Decathlon, Mountain Warehouse are sometimes good value but check the labels.

Sesma · 14/12/2025 20:52

Depends how much you want to spend, you could get a cheaper end Seasalt Janelle or Holywell waterproof puffer for about £100 in the sale or Seasalt eBay shop which is perfectly serviceable or a nice Arcteryx one for about £1500 which is likely better but a lot more ££££ and there are plenty in between.

ThePoshUns · 14/12/2025 20:56

Another vote for Didriksons

Notmyreality · 14/12/2025 21:02

The reason your DS was dry in his cheap puddle suit is because it is impermeable - basically it’s plastic. Modern jackets leak because they also try to be breathable, which is a bit of a gimmick in some respects and not always needed - see ds. As people have said you will need to pay a bit more to get something with the highest hydrostatic rating 20000 or 30000. You will need to keep up with waterproofing it. Alternatively get yourself a good old plastic Mac - like the puddle suit it will be 100% waterproof, just won’t be breathable.

LuckyNumberFive · 14/12/2025 21:03

I bought the North Face Arctic Parka about 7 years ago and it's going strong. Cost me around £400 and (coming from the person who'd never spent more than £30 on a coat before) it's paid for itself ten times over. I saved up for it and figured it was an investment I could hopefully get 10-15 years worth of use from.

Twice daily dog walks in all weather, it's still good as new. I'll never forget getting caught in what felt like a monsoon, torrential rain, about a mile from home, my partner's sopping wet, the dogs annoyed, my waterproof boots didn't manage to keep the water out, feet are soaking, but from hood to mid-calf that coat kept my bone dry.

sanityisamyth · 14/12/2025 21:14

My equi-dry is amazing. Also have a Peter Storm 3-in-1 which is holding up well.

17yearitch · 14/12/2025 21:41

Another vote for Didriksen here. Am on my second now, done 2 wet and windy autumns and winters on the west coast of Scotland with it and its not failed me yet. I walk 40-60mins every day in all weathers.

My first Didriksen parka lasted me 5 years including 2 maternity leaves when I walked miles with a baby that would wake up as soon as the pram stopped moving. Dry and warm with a well shaped hood.

For a lightweight walking waterproof I'd go for a Montane or a Rab jacket and similar waterproof trousers..

Lavender14 · 15/12/2025 00:53

Thanks all some good ideas here but I'm on a serious budget so a lot of this seems unobtainable at least right now but I will have a look at second hand.

It may be best getting a waterproof mac with taped seams in a bigger size that you can wear over your Regatta coats you already have. That shouldn't be too expensive, Mountain Warehouse and Decathlon are generally quite affordable.
