Trainers for bunions

My bunions (both feet) have increased in the last few months. I was buying men's running shoes to have the extra width but now the bunion on my right foot is so severe that the bone is rubbing the shoe sides, my toes are crowded and that's wearing a size 8 man's shoe. I also need extra shoe height, as the top of the lacing is catching the raised bone at the base of my toe.

What do people do? I run around 20 miles a week so am in the shoes a lot, but I can't go up another size or I'm going to be flopping around, plus the left foot isn't so bad so I'd have one shoe much larger for no purpose.

There must be other bunion-runners out there!

Not a runner, just someone with difficult to suit feet. Have a look at www.widefitshoes.co.uk. They do lots of wide, very wide and extremely wide styles. The reason I mention it for bunions is that they also stock deep styles. New Balance 928s are wide and deep, so I wear half a size smaller than the New Balance 6xx range. I wear a 6E width btw. They also do 4E. And other brands.

I’m not a runner, but have a look at Altra running shoes. They have a “foot shaped” toebox, wide at the ball of the foot and narrower around the heel. Also have a look at “Correct toes” toe spacers. Both have help my bunions.

Look at Inov8 trainers, a smaller UK mostly trail brand. They have a lovely wide toe box.
They are not zero drop like Altras, although even Altra have had to introduce some that aren't now, they are still close to.

Sitting here with my feet up recovering from bunion surgery which is another potential solution...

There will be a massive transition if you are a regular runner so please take this suggestion carefully but barefoot shoes will help bunion issues but you must must must do lots of research and transition carefully as they completely change your gait which if not taken carefully can cause other issues.

Thank you all. I do a lot of trail running, and general off-road work, so it sounds as though @WinterHangingBasket or @carameldecaflatte might be on the money here. My problem with @ehb102 s suggestion of the very wide fit shoes is that I end up with one foot flopping about inside the shoe (because the bunion on that side isn't nearly as bad) just so that I can get a pair that fit the right hand bunion. @Billybagpuss Barefoot shoes are an interesting suggestion, which I might try for general shoes but I don't really want a huge change in my running gait as it's taken me a while to get back into running properly after some nasty chest infections, and I know what I'm like and will use any excuse to 'run less'.

Thanks again for the suggestions.
