I'm older (61) and not especially fit, but have started going to the gym and doing work out on bike and treadmill get my heart rate to above 130/min.

Trying to build up to sustain for 30 mins - at around 20 mins presently - and aiming to do this 4 times a week...

Just wondered if others had done similar and what positive results you've had?

My aim is to improve overall level of fitness as don't really need to lose weight etc

I'm glad that helped @sagebasil I'm a bit evangelical about this sort of training. But - take it slowly. I've learnt this the hard way. I have a lot of energy so I tend to start off a run or whatever too fast & at an unsustainable pace. With my PT I'm learning how to pace myself. It's also the way to do it injury free.

The Couch to 5k sort of thing is really helpful this way.

Also, have a look, listen, read of Dr Stacy Sims (she's all over YouTube and fitness podcasts - I heard her on Andrew Huberman's podcast), particularly her explanation of SIT: Sprint Interval Training for women in menopause or post-menopause. YOu go as fast as you can for 30 seconds, then recover for as long as it takes before you're ready to go again, as fast as you can. And you do 5 intervals like this. I've done it on an exercise bike, called an assault bike - your arms & legs are going on it - the devil's bike, really.

But the effect is extraordinary. And it's only less than 15 minutes if you have around 2 mins recovery between each sprint.
