Reducing Sugars = reducing performance?

I have been a Gym goer since I was 18 (now 38).
I have had a sweet tooth for as long as I can remember - hence I always get a good work out in.
Just recently I have gone off anything sweet apart from fruit.
Cutting out all candy, fizzy drinks, sugar in coffee etc and since I can barely do any of my usual routine without feeling shattered.
I am losing weight, not gained but I am due on next week, I would usually put it down to that. But this has been going. On Since mid Aug.

Has anyone else found adjusting their diet affect performance and if so, how long until you adjusted?

It’s only been a fortnight. I’d give it a bit more time. It could be anything. Have you had bloods done? Vitamin b, iron etc?

it’s annoying when you can’t work out like you want. Hope you’re feeling better soon.

Are you getting enough carbs? If you’ve cut out a lot of sugar your body might have less than it’s used to.

Clockface222 · 04/09/2025 21:15

Maybe the thing that is putting you off eating sugar is what is affecting your performance. Some sort of virus?

Have you tried switching to less refined sugars such as a banana or are you off these too?

Hey both,

Yeh, I have been ensuring there are carbs with Hellofresh meals every night.
I have salads at lunch or a sandwich etc.
I try and get my vits from food but top up with a Berocca and omegas supplements.

Your right, it's frustrating.
I've been trying to smash the cardio after a stressful few days and it's not happening.

I don't think the Fitbit pressure helps either 😆.

What are your other fitbit metrics like compared to usual e.g hrv and resting heart rate?

Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair · 04/09/2025 22:46

@Clockface222 that's a point re; virus. I have joined a secondary gym for a change of scenery and it's quite filthy compared to my main go to.

resting heart is usually 58-63 oxygen 98%
This week resting 66-68 oxygen 94%-96%

That was my first thought - change in taste, below par and so on.

I would say you are definitely fighting something then. I would allow your body time to recover rather than push cardio too hard. Maybe switch to yoga or something more relaxing for a few days and up your nutrition. Your body is already telling you to do this.

Gymbunny2025 · 05/09/2025 07:32

Or pregnancy 🙈😂

Gymbunny2025 · 05/09/2025 07:33

Yes when my resting HR goes up it’s always a virus. But also your body may have to get used a new way of regulating energy if you’re cutting out sugar

YelramBob · 06/09/2025 21:17

Surely all the sugary stuff was fuelling you previously and now your body's trying to find an alternative source of energy, one that's not so instant?
