10k Runs

Is it frowned upon to enter one of these 10ks without raising money for charity? The one I’ve looked at you just pay to enter but it did give you the option to choose a charity.

I’m not against charities obviously but it pains me to think of asking friends and family for money.

If it's not a requirement for the race don't worry about it. No-one will care.

I have never been sponsored for any running event, it's not something that interests me at all.

WingSlutz · 20/07/2025 17:06

Not frowned upon at all, entirely up to you.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 20/07/2025 17:08

No, it's fine. Go for it!

RuthEvershedforPM · 20/07/2025 17:14

Agreed no one will care. The entry feel is enough

BogRollBOGOF · 20/07/2025 17:15

Most are running events without a primary objective of fundraising, although they may have charity partners involved.

There are charity events such as Race for Life with an objective of fundraising, but it's not compulsory to add additional fundraising after paying your entry costs.

There are a small number of high profile events such as London Marathon where runners get a charity place and have fund raising targets. (Usually marathon/ HM not 10k)

Thanks everyone! That’s definitely put my mind at ease.

I’ll ignore the fact I can’t even run 5k yet and maybe enter Grin

no one will care

charity places are for those that really want yo raise money for a specific charity. or (more often ime) people who really want to enter but only charity places are left.

good luck!

Kdub · 20/07/2025 17:40

No you don't need to raise money. I do quite a few 10k's a year and 1 half marthon and and never been sponsored, I just enjoy them. Doing London Half Marathon in the spring through a ballot place but I might fundrise for a local charity.

SkiAndTravelTheWorldWithMyDog · 20/07/2025 17:44

I've done a few and never got sponsored.

hollyblueivy · 20/07/2025 17:45

Not an issue at all. Go ahead and enter, you’ve got this!

Gymbunny2025 · 20/07/2025 18:07

As everyone else has said- no! I also avoid sponsoring others doing events as much as possible. The person entering pays a fee. That is where the charity donation should/does come from imho.

FeelinTwentySixPointTwo · 20/07/2025 19:18

Most people aren't sponsored for races. It's only really a "thing" in the big mass participation runs (eg London Marathon, Great North Run, the Great Run series of 10ks) and also those runs that are specifically for charity (eg Race for Life).

10k races take place up and down the country every week with nobody running for charities at all.

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 20/07/2025 19:27

I’ve never been sponsored either.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 21/07/2025 14:23

No. I’d never ask anyone to sponsor me for a 10k. I’d f el super cheeky asking for donations for running a distance that I run on random week days after work.

maybe for marathon length but nothing less than that. I’ve run 4 10k races and a half marathon so far this year and have more 10ks and half’s coming up and won’t be asking anyone to sponsor. Usually a portion of your entry fee goes to charity anyway.
