A question about weights

TheBuffetInspector · 03/04/2025 09:07

I'm 50 and starting to lose some weight.
I've read that working with weights can be beneficial for someone of my erm... years.

I'm only looking at handheld as I'll be using at home, am notoriously clumsy, so def not bench pressing (in fact I'm also considering steel toecap! 🤣)

What weight would you suggest for a novice and are there any YouTube videos that you could recommend?

Thank you.

I know it's not what you asked, but would you consider either joining a gym that does small group strength and conditioning, or getting a couple of private lessons to get your form right? I had never used a gym before but am two years down the road of small group strength and conditioning and love it.
If you haven't done any type of resistance training you can start with body weight - planks, push ups, lunges, squats, etc and then add in weights. Small weights will tone your existing muscles but you need big heavy weights to truly build strength. And you need someone to show you how to do that so you don't I jure yourself.
I'm listening to Next Level by Stacy Sims. It's kind of more for athletes but it does explain what's happening during peri/menopause and what movement you need. I just ignore all references to endurance sports.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately I'm unable to leave the house without support, so a gym would be out for me!
Yes, perhaps I'll start with the basics.

I am a bit of a nightmare... I read this, so I need to buy it now!

I've got a 10in1 360 maxi cross that I only get on twice a week 😭 which is silly because I do enjoy it and it's gentle on my joints.

I'll rethink. Thank you!

Caroline Girvan on YouTube.

Sanch1 · 03/04/2025 12:07

Caroline Girvan and I’d probably start with 3/4/5 kg weights if you are starting from nothing? You can invest in heavier as you get stronger.

TheBuffetInspector · 03/04/2025 14:24

@ToBeOrNotToBee @Sanch1

Confused now after first post.

The thing is I'm fairly strong in my self.
I lugged a tonne of bagged gravel from pavement in to front garden (then slowly in to back garden) by myself.

What I don't want to do is wreck lower back or shoulders.

It's not like I'm going to waving the things around!

Try lift with cee on YouTube. She does workouts specifically for over 40/50s. You only need low weights to start as you need to be sure you have correct form. Then choose a weight were the last few reps are an effort. What weight is right for one person is not right for everyone.

Sanch1 · 03/04/2025 15:51

So starting with low weights will mean you develop good form and therefore won’t ruin your back or shoulders.

thebluehen · 03/04/2025 15:55

Caroline Girvan iron programme on you tube.

TheBuffetInspector · 03/04/2025 16:05

Well I've already got 1kg ones. Foam handles etc. I used them doing online aerobics and my word, I had to drop them 😂 in the old days it was a can of beans or bottle of water!
So I know they make a difference that way... Def won't doing reps... I'll have a look at Caroline Girvan, thank you all. I will start with my 1kg because I know posture and things are an issue, but worth a go I think.

I'll post from traction 🤣

I’m new to this too. I’ve started Caroline Girvin on you tube. I’ve only done 2 and trying to get my steps in but just wanted to say well done for making a start. Keep trying to tell myself that something is better than nothing. Good luck

Ah thank you! Well the only exercise I've done today is mowing the lawn out back and strimming the front.

I've yet to even load a YouTube video!

BUT, I shall be having a look later ready to try tomorrow. I know where my aches and pains are so definitely won't be launching myself in to anything.

Good luck to you too!
