Gym Impersonating Les Mills Bodypump

Yorkshiredolls · 26/03/2025 18:03

My small local gym has introduced a new "body pump" class a few times a week. I was excited as Ive done Les Mills bodypump before at another place, I enjoyed the routines and the vibe but left as that gym is quite far and dear and this one’s practically on my Doorstep and cheaper.

However a couple of weeks in, I feel like it must be an "inspired by bodypump" class rather than Les Mills qualified instructors . It’s similar, but I’ve yet to be guided through the structured routines in the way that I expected and the music seems to be the instructors own playlist rather than the LM release playlists I was expecting.

Musics not important of course, but I was expecting a certain quality experience that I’m not getting. I want to go to the gym manager without sounding like an arse. Am I right to complain or is this common and accepted to not have the Branded class and essentially a copy? They are not advertising it as Les Mills BodyPump, just “body pump”.

So they’re advertising a non branded body pump class, and what you’re getting is a generic instructors own body pump class.

I’m confused as to what you think you’d complain about.

It’s not advertised as Les Mills and you’re not getting Les Mills. You’d look a bit odd to complain about that.

If you think there’s not enough introduction or tuition for you joining the class as a new start then by all means ask about that.

The franchise classes are expensive to offer compared to instructors doing their own.

cramptramp · 26/03/2025 18:09

Everywhere does body pump and has done for many years. I’ve never seen one advertised as Les Mills Body Pump.

Traceysgoingtobelivid · 26/03/2025 18:09

How on earth do you think that you can complain that a class isn’t Les Mills when it isn’t advertised as such, honestly you are being ridiculous.

firkinn · 26/03/2025 18:09

“body pump” is a generic class term though, you’re comparing it to something branded you’ve done before which wouldn’t be a basis for a complaint. It’s like buying off brand cereal, then telling them it needs to just be like kelloggs as that’s what you expected.

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 26/03/2025 18:09

It depends on how they advertised it. I used to do a bodypump fx, which was similar to les mills, but a different company.

If its advertised as just "body pump" as long as its similar then its probably no issue.

The same gym used to do a Spin class that was the proper licensed spin format, but the licence was too dear (it was a small independent gym) so they changed it to "group cycle" and it was pretty much identical.

Sinkintotheswamp · 26/03/2025 18:11

TBH, anything is better than the Les Mills music. I've been dipping in and out for twenty years and it's always the awful music that stops me for a while.

As long as the exercise is safe and well taught I don't think it's an issue.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 26/03/2025 18:13

If it's not labelled as Les Mills why do you think it should be Les Mills? I'm confused

Les mils aren't the only ones who teach body pump

Winter2020 · 26/03/2025 18:14

You want to use the cheaper gym but have the same experience as you did at the more expensive gym? Good luck with that.

PlanetOtter · 26/03/2025 18:15

Body pump is quite generic I think? It’s just a style of class. Les Mills is the actual branded bit.

Yorkshiredolls · 26/03/2025 18:15

Because I thought BodyPump was a trademark hence me asking!

Why do people on this forum like to cut people down for asking a question like Im
a frigging moron or something

OP posts:
VerySkilledFirefighter · 26/03/2025 18:16

To be fair to OP, Les Mills owns the trade mark “BodyPump” so no one else can call their exercise class that, unless it is a Les Mills class.

I’d probably report to Les Mills and let them enforce it if they see fit (which I think they routinely do from looking at Google).

Doesn’t matter, Les Mills owns both trademarks.

Laundereddelrey · 26/03/2025 18:22

I go to a Les Mills gym two of the instructors are not experienced and do some random mashup Les Mills whereas the older more experienced instructors are fab at mixing and matching old and new Les Mills. It is like playing Russian roulette hoping to get the decent instructors so I feel your pain.

Movinghouseatlast · 26/03/2025 18:24

I used to do 'body pump' at my gym, I don't think Les Mills can own the name or they would be suing people all over the place.

DelilahDystopia · 26/03/2025 18:25

Oh I thought bodypump was always les mills tbh. Some gyms local to me do versions but they're called something else.

I wouldn't complain though. Just don't go again if you didn't like it

UpUpUpU · 26/03/2025 18:26

It honestly astounds me what people can find to complain about on here

BobbyBiscuits · 26/03/2025 18:28

'Body pump' as a generic name for aerobic classes in that style has been around for decades. In every gym I've seen and beyond.

It wasn't advertised as by that particular operator/brand/technique. I can't imagine the words 'body' and 'pump' have exclusive use by one firm legally.

Surely if you dislike the class then don't use it and maybe give feedback about it's actual content. But the name isn't really misleading so don't get caught up in that.

If you want 'Body Pump (TM)' by that specific branding then attend classes approved by that company.

evilharpy · 26/03/2025 18:35

What outcome would you be hoping for if you complained?

LM classes come at a large cost to both the gym amd the instructor. Chances are if the gym could afford the LM fees they would offering LM classes already - or there may not be an instructor locally who wants to pay the quarterly release fees. You may get it removed from the timetable but it's unlikely to be replaced with LM Body Pump.

Newgirls · 26/03/2025 18:40

I’m so old I remember there being body pump classes before Les mills. In our gym they are now called pump fix etc

pretty sure everyone does a version of it 🤷‍♀️

Hi I was first just trying to gauge whether its a common thing for it to be generic as like I said I thought it was a trademark. Mixed response here but the general theme seems to be thats its pretty common and normal to have a generic body pump class.

and thats fine and I do still enjoy it so will
continue to go and adjust my expectations accordingly. so given the helpful viewpoints shared here, I will just leave it now as I don’t want the class removed since I and lots of people are enjoying it

I was coming on to say the same. I remember doing Body pump 15yrs ago and that was just a class at a leisure centre, no Les Mills.
