Distance tracking error

I ran/walked on my walking treadmill for 22 minutes at a speed of 10. My treadmill said 3.2km. My Apple Watch said 2.2km. Which is more likely to be correct? Not sure why they are a km different

The treadmill is more likely to be right as it will actually measure the distance. The watch will be measuring arm swings and making a judgment about stride length.

Neither is going to be right, so it's anyone's guess which is closest.

Walking treadmills are notoriously poor at measuring distance. All treadmills need to be calibrated and even the decent, big and expensive ones in gyms can often be "off." So with the cheap walking ones for home use, it's a bit of a finger in the air as to whether they're right or not.

As for your Apple watch, that's not going to be right either as, if you're running indoors, it's "guessing" by your arm swing.

So as for which is the most wrong of the two measurements, it's not clear. Running outside with GPS is the most reliable way to measure or, if you must run indoors, a quality calibrated treadmill.

Realistically neither! But either way you ran for 22 mins which is the thing to focus on.

Out of interest what does a speed of 10 mean? Most treadmills give you mph/kph so you know exactly how far you’ve travelled in x time

carrottopper · 29/03/2025 20:34

I’ve just googled it and it’s 10km which is the max speed
