Anyone still running in their 60s

I’ve run since my mid 20s up to half marathon level. Run through three pregnancies and loved every minute of it (more or less). But it’s sore now and post menopause Im trying to integrate more weight training and Pilates for long term muscle maintenance and flexibility. But my first love exercise wise is a good long run. Don’t know how much longer I can keep it going but just wonder what others experience of it is.

I am not a runner, but my DB is and still runs. He was 80 this year. He is very fit. Went skiing last year, has an allotment and sails!

I'm fast approaching 60 and still running ultra marathons so yes definitely can be done!

PiggyPlumPie · 15/03/2025 22:18

My mum has only just stopped running in the last few months due to Parkinsons. She is hoping to get back to it if she can improve her balance a little.

She is very nearly 82. Four days after she turned 80, we ran a 10k together. I am very proud of her, she's an inspiration!

So keep on keeping on even though not as springy as before.

I'm in my 60's and run marathons. I've slowed down a little bit but I still love it!

You could try jeffing, it's a structured run/walk method. Look for the Girls That Jeff group on Facebook, loads of mature women runners on there loving it. Much easier on the body and can improve performance

my mother in law is late 60s and still runs…5k mostly but she is in great shape. My father in law is in his 70s and runs half marathons frequently…he is way faster than me (I’m in my 40s). I really really want to keep running as I get older…I plan to keep on as long as I can. Keep at it!!

My dad stopped in his 60s after a double hip replacement. He never listened to his body though and also did physical jobs. I run, but have always found weights, yoga and general cross training better than just running on its own, and hope to be still doing it all my life.

Loads of people run well beyond their 60s! I am in my 40s but I run in lots of “masters” (aka veterans) events and there are people into their 90s. No reason why you can’t keep going.

ThymeScent · 16/03/2025 07:12

Yes - am early 60s. Also took up rowing recently and row in an eight with people es going from early 40s- 70. Cycle every day. Just about to do 5th skiing week since December. Paddleboard most days in the summer.
’Retired’ in December precisely to enjoy as much exercise as possible.

ChasingBlueMoons · 16/03/2025 07:14

Ultra running events are packed full of older runners.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 16/03/2025 07:15

I don't run... but do a lot of exercise and know quite a lot of people who stopped running/ skiing and took up nordic walking.

If you are worried about health and sustainability as you get older, it's worth exploring similar options.

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 16/03/2025 07:16

I’m in my 40s but there are plenty at my running club running in their 60s and 70s. I’m very much hoping to do the same

Summervibes24 · 16/03/2025 07:27

Bushey Park has a special 80s & 90s park run in July - go there if you're nearby it's truly motivating!

I'm mid 50s and will keep going as long as I can. A guy in NZ is 101 and still going!

Fraudornot · 29/03/2025 22:40

Has anyone attempted a first marathon in their 60s?

My husband did his first (and only) marathon when he was 60. He'd had a heart attack two years before but had made an excellent recovery. He only started running really seriously when he was made redundant in his late 50s and was able to go straight onto his pension. Joined an athletics club and our local parkrun started up around the same time. He was going to do another marathon but got injured and in the end decided it wasn't for him anyway. He did a few half-marathons and 10ks but has now (at almost 70) turned his back on organised races. Still does a lot of running, though.

Chocolateteabag · 03/04/2025 20:49

I often finish fell races slightly before or after a lady in the v65 category (usually behind!) and there are plenty of ladies inthe v60 category

its my plan to win v70+ fell races!!
