Running with tendonitis

I'm a slow runner, belong to a local club, quite old but enjoy my weekly sessions and miss it if I can't run.

About 6 months ago I developed tendonitis in one ankle. Rested, did the exercise the physio recommended etc but it seems to have come back after running. The pain is bearable at the moment, but I don't think I should continue running. I also do a lot of hiking. I don't really know what to do for the best.

I really miss my running.

Bumping for you. I also have this. Such a nuisance.

Thank you. It really is frustrating! All the stuff on the internet suggests resting it ... so how am I going to get any exercise!

You might need to get orthotics or new trainers that work with your gait - did you get your trainers from a proper running shop? Also get into doing stretching / yoga most days to stop issues building up again

NetZeroZealot · 07/03/2025 17:27

Yes, I bought good ones from a running shop and had a gait analysis done and they are still fairly new.
Always stretch after a run and do a warm up first.
I used to do Pilates regularly too, and the issues pre-date me having to stop.

Can you get regular massages? It can be tight muscles elsewhere in the leg that leads to the ankle strain.

does sound like swimming might be more forgiving!

I’ve recently triggered tendonitis in my knee from increasing squat weight too quickly at the gym. I’ve been applying a bag of frozen peas an ice pack for about 10 minutes a couple of times a day which has really helped.

I’ve read that stretching can actually aggravate tendonitis but doing a good warm up before exercise is recommended. It might be worth getting an assessment to see if it is an imbalance or misalignment that is causing it.

is it Achilles tendonitis?

RICE Rest Ice Compress Elevate a couple of anti inflammatories would help too

Look at the Bill & Brad videos on Youtube about Achilles Tendonitis. Heel raises helped me.

I had tendonisitis last 2 years.
even walking hurt.
and then in a frustrating turn of events last March I broke my ankle, and badly sprained two ligaments.
which forced me to be off my feet completely for a month, and on crutches and a solid boot for another month and then 4 months with a metal ankle brace.
it all forced me to really rest.
by October my ankle felt stable .
and I realised that I don’t have tendonitiis
to the point that I was always wearing adidas ultraboost with a riser insole.
For the last 18 months prior to October.

last week I was given a pair of camper shoes with no rise at all, entirely barefoot.
there is no way I could have worn them pre breaking my ankle.
I just couldn’t rest my legs enough to get rid of the tendonitis
but the enforced rest of breaking an ankle has cure it .

this is a long way to say, rest seems pretty important to curing tnedonitis.

I've had this for a year - I hurt my calf first, then the achilles started a few weeks later. Medical grade inserts with slight heel raise, have helped a lot. However, I've just had 3 weeks enforced rest, due to a virus, it's had the very welcome side effect of my achilles currently being pain free. I'm a walker, not a runner, did my first post viral walk today, and no probs. 🤞
