Which running watch?

Can anyone recommend a watch for running. Not looking for anything massively complicated I don't think. Probably just need it to time me, read my running distance and to be used as a normal watch too. Not too ugly as using as a normal watch too.

However if it can do health summary I'd be open to that too.

Probably not top end price but flexible up to £150 if needed.

Any recommendations welcome.

Always a Garmin. I've had that and an apple watch and the Garmin is far more accurate. Well supported with a good app (Garmin connect) for data.

Thanks. Any particular type of Garmin?

I’d say Garmin too, any of the forerunners are good.

I used an Apple Watch for a while but couldn’t get on with it at all.

Thanks

I've got a garmin too, very reliable. Mine also has a fall alert, which is useful if, like me, you tend to fall when running!

Another vote for Garmin forerunners. We have always had Garmin watchs recently got a free Samsung when DH got his new phone. It's no where near as accurate as the Garmin watchs we've had.

100% agree with this.

I had garmin, sold it to replace with apple, spent a whole family get together grumbling to my cousin that I’d made a mistake, he laughed at me and said he’d never be so stupid. The next family gathering he’d given his garmin to his son and was relying on his apple and was grumbling that he’d been really stupid. I agreed as I’d bought a new garmin so was very happy.

i have forerunner 255s

I use it mainly for swimming but it’s very accurate for running and you can download training plans so it reminds you in the morning what you should be doing.

swimming it does swolf, stroke detection etc everything you could need. In addition it does flights of stairs counts which actually I find quite useful, step count, intensity minutes also very useful.
loads of running stats etc and it’s old enough that you could definitely get a second hand one in budget and a new one for not much more.
battery life around 2 weeks
ugliness - not awful but it’s the one thing I think garmin could improve on, but they do come with a kind of status so you get away with it.

Garmin all the way! Any of the Forerunners will do the job, I wear a Fenix but they are more expensive than your budget and it sounds like you'd be grand with a Forerunner. Garmin's app is Connect which records all your activities.

I've worn Garmin for watches in one form or another for a lot of years and they will cutting off my cold, dead wrist before I swap it for any other brand!

SunblockSue · 07/02/2025 19:56

There are some good competitors to Garmin now which are cheaper. Coros is a good value brand and I believe is cheaper than Garmin but I think you'll struggle to get either at £150 or less unless you go for a really old model.

ploshbug · 10/02/2025 15:55

Garmin Forerunner fan here too. Just incredible, user-friendly, long battery life, and loads more. I have a small wrist and have the 255s and honestly, love how well it fits my wrist. Which is what makes me love it more not to try something like Coros - saw an influencer mention how imprecise/huge the Coros watches can be and as someone with a small wrist I don't want to spend money on a watch that slides up and down my wrist when I'm running.

I've bought a secondhand forerunner. Just figuring out how to use it. Thanks for all the advice.

I'm obviously a bit late to the table, but I swear by Huawei.

I had a Garmin Inbetween Huawei watches and it seems to be 3 x the price for not much more.

Admittedly, I only need the basics, but my Huawei tracks runs, indoor and outdoor swims and I can control my music on it, which is all I need. Admittedly you cannot (easily) link to Strava which matters to some people.
