I've tried couch to 5k, I hated every second and find running mind numbingly boring so never stick with it.

My weight has keeps up and up, I've hit 18 stone. I'm disgusted with that but it is what it is. I have a stressful job that is often long hours but desk based. I eat lunch at my desk while working.
I walk the dog a few times a week but this is a slow stroll as he like to stop and sniff everything!

Although obviously I would like to lose weight, my main goal is to increase my general fitness, cardio and muscle strength. I'm so out of shape two flights of stairs and I'm breathing heavy.

Can anyone recommend a good YouTube video I can follow that will be achievable for someone in my state that will actually help better my fitness levels? I've scrolled through some but I don't know what is good or not and I find it very overwhelming.
Please help me get back on track.

Get Fit with Rick - walking workouts

Brunetteshel · 04/01/2025 21:27

YouTube is sort of pointless, you need something in real life. Is there any groups you can join or a personal trainer etc?

Elle771 · 04/01/2025 21:30

I found the Joe wicks beginners 15min videos very doable before work at home.. literally 15mins and nothing crazy think it was 30secs on 30secs off x 10 or something similar with a gentle warm up and down

Another recommendation for Get Fit with Rick. He's brilliant, not at all annoying and his videos are so easy to follow. They have great music too.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 04/01/2025 22:27

I'm a huge fan of fitness blender stuff, largely as they don't have whooping nonsense "you go girl" etc nor trashy pop music. You can play your own music on another device.

Not worth spending on their programmes but you should find everything you need from them.

Well dome for committing to make the change and good luck!

I search for videos with women who look like me, ie overweight, so I can see that bodies like mind CAN do these things and I don't think "oh well it's easy for them because they're thin". search "overweight exercises" or whatever and click on whoever looks good! on days when my arthritis is bad I look for chair exercises or sofa yoga. any movement is good. Well done!

Walk! A brisk 30 minutes every day, during which you get a bit out of breath. Then as that starts to feel comfortable, increase your time by, say, 10 minute increments.

When you feel ok with that, then maybe start some body weight strength exercises: squats, press ups, planks, burpees.

But the only way to tackle weight is by diet.

Keep an absolutely forensic food diary for two weeks. Write down everything. Then see where you can replace bad choices with good ones. Teach yourself to make good choices rather than punish yourself.

I find eating a lot of green, red and yellow vegetables, plus more protein than you might imagine, works. I don’t do a lot of white carbs - bread and butter is a treat!

Highly recommend get fit with Rick, for walking workouts, and Team Body Project for low impact proper workouts. Both are on YouTube but also have their own wider platforms if you want a bit more.

This is a bonkers statement, if you’re up and moving it’s not pointless. What about being in the same room as the other people working out makes you burn more calories? It’s not always possible for many reasons to get out to a gym or class, following a YouTube class is a great alternative and makes doing something like this much more accessible to many people.

OP I’ve started doing Grow with Jo videos after lots of recommendations and really like them, she has videos of all different lengths, levels etc, I’m sure you’ll find something you like. I like going to classes/the gym but right now I just can’t make it work and need to work out at home.

Another vote for Get Fit with Rick. The sessions are quite short so easy to fit in and don't over-do it if your fitness base is low.

They're described as walking workouts, but it's basically low-impact aerobics.

Weights are also worth adding in. Joe Wicks is probably a good starting point as he has a large range of sessions.

Fitness is a mixture of cardiovascular and strength. Normally one is a bit more developed than the other and in the early days they can tag-team as you make progress. Being heavily out of breath from two flights of stairs sounds like cardiovascular is the priority, and the good news is that that tends to show results quicker.

Increasing general movement and walking where possible is also a good move at this stage.

Definitely team body project! Loads of good complete beginner workouts, and the people are encouraging but not annoying! Xx

LoafofSellotape · 05/01/2025 13:03

Lesley Sanson walk to fitness, loads on tube.

Another vote for Get Fit with Rick, but I also love Sharona's Hill walking workouts, I lost just over 9 stones and I absolutely credit her videos for being happy (without being 'too much') and motivating. She has loads of different music themes too- you can do a Disney one or a heavy metal one lol
