Can I cycle with a 3yo and a 2yo?

I desperately need to get fit and I miss the excercise that I would do before having kids. I used to love cyclcing but since having the kids I stopped.

I imagine I can cycle with my 2yo on the back of the bike but has anyone any experience of cycling with two little ones on a bike?

I just really want to get back to being fit. I'll probably get an e-bike to build up my stamina as there would be too much equiptment to carry in the car.

To be honest having 1 on the bike impairs your balance so two would be a bit much.

Look at a cargo bike or bike trailer - quite a few options out there.
Hopefully won't be long before youngsters are old enough to cycle with you!

My husband used to do this with one on a seat that went in place of the rear pannier rack, and the younger one on a crossbar seat. I never felt strong enough to balance the bike though. A trailer might be better, or a cargo bike of you can afford one of those.

My friend used to have one in a bike seat and one on a trailer bike. Not sure of ages though.

CouchSpud · 01/01/2025 19:11

How old are they?

I used to ride with one on front and one in trailer.

The trailer then turned in to a tow bike.

I had both DC on peddles by 3 so I would put 3 year old on their own bike and the 2 year old either on a seat on yours or on a balance bike to get them ready for peddles within the year.

A cargo bike would be perfect for this

Google Tern bikes. They have e bikes that aren’t too large, but will still let you put two small children on the back and carry some luggage too.

We have a cargo bike. Been using since kids were just turned one and three - they love it! It would be very good exercise if you turned the electric option off. 😂

Also have a spin bike in the garage and they will usually play for 20-30 mins whilst I do a class.

How difficult is it to get cycling with the kids... Im deciding between a cargo bike or a fold up one to take to work.

Ideally I want both but thats too much of a financial commitment. My husband who is a keen cyclist is convinced I won't use the cargo bike and will end up with it stolen. 😭

It’s brilliant! I was a bit nervous at first but they really love it. I don’t drive though, so it’s a massive game changer as the alternative is walking, and that is so much slower on the nursery run.

We’ve had a cargo bike for a number of years, used it everyday, it’s great.
They are big and heavy though, so you need somewhere substantial to store it, and a decent lock and insurance.

2 in a trailer

There are a few places near us that you can hire various cargo bike types for a couple of weeks to see if they work for you as they're quite an investment. Have a Google. The terns are amazing but £££.

Yes this is a great idea, I will have a look!

I take both kids on his bike to nursery every day (3 and 13 months). It's doable. You get used to the balance and weight distribution quite easily.
