Absolute beginner dumbbell routine?

Avoidingthetwitch · 01/01/2025 09:52

I am determined to start strength training this year and have some adjustable dumbbells. I’m not very co-ordinated and would like to follow a video routine where they do it with you rather than just show you what to do - happy to pay for the right app/subscription.

also looking to up my exercise in general but from a low base- so any suggestions for a beginner welcome.

I'm looking for the same thing - hopefully we get some good suggestions.

Look on TikTok

I just randomly find a video on you tube and go along with it

I saw a recommendation for Cheryl Coulombe on here, just tried the first of her 20 minute series today - seems like nice clear instructions, I'd prefer no music but it wasn't too intrusive. I think she has a 30 min series too, and all sorts of other videos but I find a series better than trying to pick and choose individual workouts.

My weights were about 1/3 to 1/2 of hers

I’m new as well. And I have been using the lady on you tube called senior shape fitness. She is wonderful. Calm. Gives instructions really well. And has a ton of video. Not just for seniors as I am 49. But. She is really good. And easy to do. I use them at the gym

Caroline Girvan iron programme.

I have been doing it for 18 months with great results

I tried Caroline Girvan last year but she's a bit much for me! (I'm 64 and small, never had much upper body strength). I know a lot of women do find her very good but I found the music really annoying and she doesn't give very clear instructions on any of her YouTubes I tried.

I used to use Fitness Blender a lot. Try a few different workouts on YouTube to see what style works for you - many others just didnt feel right once I was used to Fitness Blender. Another thing I loved about them was that the videos were free on YouTube but you could pay a nominal fee for a programme which guided you on which one to do each day to make sure it’s well rounded. Costs were still very reasonable

I did try Caroline Girvan, enjoyed iron series but not so much the others

Depending on your age, you could look at the Own Your Menopause app. There are beginners courses on there and if you buy the book first you get the beginners routines "free", otherwise a 50% on the app subscription for the first year. I don't think it really matters what age you are, but the OYG routines are good for beginners and start with body weight for the first couple of weeks.

I'm also wanting to do this. I am planning to start doing pilates with little hand weights and a foam roller. Apparently very good for your back, core, pelvic floor etc. There's a lady on IG who is great but I had to unfollow her as she puts out so much content!

rwalker · 03/01/2025 10:14

YouTube is your go to for this

everycowandagain · 03/01/2025 10:15

Fitnessblender.com is great, as @Toomanyusernamestochoose said above. Lots of free workouts and you can filter for equipment, length, difficulty. Great for getting started and trying different workouts to see what you enjoy.

I do Pilates, I think it's good as part of a mix. It's best if you can have at least some in-person sessions with a qualified trainer, there's not much benefit to doing it wrong and it can be somewhat subtle. Also people often need adjustments to suit them.

My instructor started zoom sessions during covid and I've continued with that - she can spot when anyone isn't doing things quite right, or right for them, even on a screen.

Another vote for Fitness Blender, and a bonus that it's free on YouTube.

I have an Apple One subscription which Fitness is part of. I like the videos and the instruction is clear but obviously you're paying for this and the videos are all the same format and quite similar. I like Apple Fitness as it ties in with my health data on my iPhone and Apple Watch.

If you haven't bought any weights yet I saw loads on Temu super cheap last night.

I also like Growing Ananas on Yputube and she does some HIIT style workouts with light to medium dumbbells. I prefer this style of using weights rather than just stood still lifting weights.
